Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Adrianne Palicki recently discussed the ABC series’ unrealized spinoff, Marvel’s Most Wanted, hinting that she thinks canceling the show may have been a mistake on Disney’s part.
Palicki starred on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, who Marvel Comics fans will also know as Mockingbird and/or Agent 19. During an interview with Den of Geek, the actor fondly recalled her time playing Bobbi Morse, saying she “loved” working on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and remains good friends with co-stars Ming-Na Wen, Henry Simmons and Nick Blood. Notably, Blood would have starred opposite Palicki on Most Wanted, which shot a pilot but was never picked up as a full series.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 set up the Most Wanted spinoff, with Bobbi and her ex-husband, Lance Hunter (Blood), being disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and forced to go on the run. “That moment in the bar, when we say goodbye to Mack, is still like, I think, one of the best moments of that show just because the love that’s with those three characters is so much and you really feel the loss of those characters,” Palicki told Den of Geek. Regarding Bobbi and Lance’s planned spinoff, she added that the Most Wanted pilot was “really good,” but that she believes ABC was moving away from having “any more Marvel shows” at that time. “So it’s too bad because I think it would have really done well,” Palicki concluded.
What Happened to Marvel’s Most Wanted?
Most Wanted received its pilot order at ABC in August 2015. A number of additional actors were cast to star alongside Palicki and Blood, including Delroy Lindo as Dominic Fortune, Fernanda Andrade as Christina Santos and Oded Fehr as a “well-known” Marvel character. The pilot wrapped production in March 2016. Two months later, however, ABC announced that it would not be ordering Most Wanted to series. To this day, the pilot has never been released. (A similar fate befell Marvel’s planned New Warriors series, which was being made for ABC’s sister channel, Freeform.) Palicki is no stranger to this sort of thing, having also starred as the lead in NBC’s failed Wonder Woman pilot from 2011.
At any rate, the Den of Geek interview isn’t the first time Palicki has spoken to the Most Wanted pilot’s quality. “Oh, I saw the pilot,” she told TVLine in 2019. “It was actually really, really good. It was a little darker, grittier…” Palicki also offered some plot details for the scrapped show. “We were mercenaries, yeah. It’s kind of an extension of what we were dealing with before, where we, like, ended up trying to get married again and all hell breaks loose because people are after us,” she said. “Ultimately it’s us just kind of fighting for our lives.”
The Post-Agents of SHIELD MCU
A Marvel Television production, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was originally presented as being part of Marvel Studios’ larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, like just about all of Marvel’s pre-Disney+ shows, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually went its own way, resulting in its MCU canonicity being called into question by the time it aired its seventh and final season in 2020. To that end, some Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans were particularly annoyed by the finale of Marvel Studios’ 2021 Disney+ series Hawkeye, which revealed that the MCU’s Agent 19 was Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini), not Bobbi Morse — though this doesn’t necessarily mean that Palicki’s character has been scrubbed from canon altogether.
Regarding a potential future in the MCU, Palicki also told Den of Geek that she would love to play one of the X-Men, such as Rogue or Jean Grey. In the meantime, some of her non-Marvel roles include Commander Kelly Grayson on Hulu’s popular Star Trek parody series The Orville and Lady Jaye in the 2013 G.I. Joe sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Additionally, while Palicki’s Marvel future is uncertain, her would-be Most Wanted co-star Lindo is finally set to join the MCU in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Blade reboot. That said, Lindo’s role in the Mahershala Ali-led film is currently unknown.
