Black Swan Ending Explained – OtakuKart

Black Swan

In 2010, a movie named Black Swan came out, which shook the audiences, won an Oscar for the leading actress Natalie Portman and found her the love of her life on the movie set itself. This movie, known as Black Swan, was one that shattered records for being choreographically and cinematically so beautiful, and it’s hard to replicate the same even today. The plot of the movie is spun around the creation of writer and artist  Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet helmed by the New York City Ballet company.

Black Swan is a thriller drama that’s about the life of a ballerina Nina who is cast as a white swan in Princess Odette. After she gets the chance to play the white one, she slowly descends into madness when her artistic director demands so much from her and suggests her evil rival, Lily might make a better sawn than her. The problem is not with Nina’s dancing skills, she has to play both the black swan and the white sawn by herself. Though she plays both parts beautifully, Thomas suggests is not meant to play the black swan as she is not intrinsically evil. To make matters worse, Nina’s crazy mother demands the worst from her, and her father is absent from their lives.

Before we head into the main part of the movie, here’s a trailer to give you a headstart.

Black Swan: Factual Details

Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is the most thrilling and psychologically horrifying piece of work. As Nina is under tremendous pressure to play the black swan, she finds it hard to keep a grip on reality and loses herself to the madness of the ballet. By the end of the movie, her soul is bleeding, as are her soles. Besides the above-mentioned inspiration, director Darren has cited Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Double as an inspiration for the movie. Before the production of the movie took off, both Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman trained for months to perfect themselves in the art of ballet. The movie Black Swan was produced in New York City in the year 2009 by Fox Searchlight Pictures. It was up for the best picture award at the Academy Awards that year, and eventually, Natalie won the award for the best actress part- a role she so beautifully nailed.

Black Swan: Ending Explanation

The ending of Black Swan is every bit heartbreaking and gut-wrenching because the protagonist does something that no one ever thought about. After she beautifully aces the white swan, she comes back to the dressing room to get changed for the black swan. That’s the final act, and she has to show the white one’s suicide in this one. In the scene, Lily steps at her door to congratulate her for the amazing performance, but she tends to jab her out.

As shocking as that may be, Nina in reality, stabs herself while thinking about her adversary. As she looks down at her stomach, she sees a sharp shard of glass sticking out of her very own stomach. She pulls it out and looks in the mirror, and realizes she killed herself. Her director, Thomas was right – she was her own worst enemy, after all. She was no strange to harming herself. As it’s seen, she would discover marks and scratches all over her body out of hatred for herself.

Natalie still manages to go on stage and perform the finale act and does so immaculately. In the end, Thomas calls her out and asks her what she did. The audiences think it’s a fake suicide scene, while in reality, it is a real one. Nina dies naturally as a black swan, and the screen goes pitch dark.
