The first look at What We Do in the Shadows actor Harvey Guillén in the upcoming DC Universe movie Blue Beetle has been released.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the exclusive first look images of Guillén’s Dr. Sanchez, a scientist who works for Susan Sarandon’s nefarious Victoria Kord in Blue Beetle. The first image shows Dr. Sanchez looking away from a monitor while the second reveals the scientist standing his ground in front of a locked cell with Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle inside. In an interview with EW, Guillén described his character as “complex,” noting, “You’re loyal to the profession and the job that you have, and you’re loyal to being a good person, and you have to make a choice. Sometimes we don’t make the choices. We’re human. And when given a choice, we might make the wrong one.”

Xolo Maridueña, who is best known for portraying Miguel Diaz in Netflix’s Cobra Kai, leads the cast of Blue Beetle as its titular hero Jaime Reyes, a recent college grad who comes into contact with a powerful piece of technology known as the Scarab. The technology bonds to Reyes forming an alien exosuit around him and giving him numerous abilities such as flight, enhanced strength, and weapon and energy generation. While most superhero movies have their protagonists responding favorably to their new abilities, Maridueña has previously stated that Jaime is the only superhero who doesn’t really seem to want his powers.
Does Blue Beetle Have a Future in James Gunn’s DC Universe?
Blue Beetle is one of three still-unreleased films that were greenlit under former DC Films boss Walter Hamada, with the other two being The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Despite initially being developed as part of the DC Extended Universe, DC Studios boss James Gunn recently suggested that Blue Beetle could become part of the forthcoming DC Universe, which will kick off with the animated series Creature Commandos and the feature film Superman: Legacy. Gunn previously spoke highly of Blue Beetle, calling it “a fantastic film about a kid who is a marvelous part of the DCU.” While Gunn has remained silent on Blue Beetle’s DCU future, rumors have suggested that the young superhero will stick around post-reboot.
In addition to Maridueña, Guillén and Sarandon, Blue Beetle stars Adriana Barraza as Nana, Jaime’s grandmother; Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Jaime’s father; Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes, Jaime’s mother; Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes, Jaime’s younger sister; George Lopez as Rudy, Jaime’s uncle; Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Jaime’s love interest; and Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax.
Directed by Angel Manuel Soto from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Blue Beetle opens in theaters on Aug. 18.
