Michael Gandolfini’s mystery role in Daredevil: Born Again gets a first look through some newly surfaced set photos.
The Twitter account @DDevilUpdates shared photos from the set of the upcoming Daredevil series for Disney+, which show Gandolfini’s unknown character stepping out of a New York City cab in a hoodie and jeans. Close examination reveals a woman cropped out of one picture who appears to be opening the door for Gandolfini.
A New Addition to the Daredevil Cast for Its Disney+ Debut
Gandolfini was announced as a member of the Daredevil: Born Again cast in December 2022. While Marvel has not disclosed the identity of his character, Gandolfini shared a hint about his Staten Island upbringing and expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I mean, it’s incredible. It’s so, so exciting and daunting and everyone is so nice and so talented,” Gandolfini said. “I remember getting my first text from the producer, I was driving, and it said, ‘Welcome to the MCU!’ You see that and it just, like, hits you, you know? I teared up, and it’s just like, ‘Oh my God!’ I’m very grateful and lucky.”
The son of late The Sopranos star James Gandolfini, Michael followed in his father’s footsteps beginning with the young version of his iconic Tony Soprano role in 2021’s The Many Saints of Newark. Additionally, he played opposite Spider-Man star Tom Holland in the Russo Brothers’ crime drama Cherry for AppleTV+. Despite all the speculation surrounding his MCU character, Gandolfini’s role is set to appear in multiple MCU projects after Daredevil: Born Again is released.
Daredevil: Born Again sees the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock after the cancelation of the original Netflix series in 2018. Cox reprised the Man Without Fear in a surprise cameo in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and then appeared in 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+. Cox will be joined by Netflix series alumni Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher. Though Marvel has not confirmed if Born Again will retain the canon of the Netflix series, original Daredevil showrunner Erik Oleson views the new run as Season 4. “I still call [Daredevil: Born Again] season 4, but they’re trying to insist it isn’t, so I’ll go along with whatever they want to call it,” Olesen said.
Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to release sometime in the fall of 2024 on Disney+.
