Channing Tatum reveals his production company has acquired the rights to Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore’s 1990 romantic film Ghost.

Free Association, Channing Tatum’s production company, has acquired the rights to the 1990 romance film Ghost.

Variety revealed that Tatum has plans to remake Ghost and potentially play Sam Wheat, the late Patrick Swayze’s character. However, the Magic Mike actor wants to change several of the original film’s controversial stereotypes. “But we’re going to do something different,” Tatum said. “I think it needs to change a little bit.” As of writing, there is no timeline for Tatum’s planned Ghost reboot.

Released in 1990, Ghost stars Swayze and Demi Moore as Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen, respectively. After a night at the theater, Sam dies when a mugger attempts to steal his wallet. Following Sam’s unexpected death, he returns as a ghost and must protect Molly from Carl and Willie, who murdered him to transfer laundered money. Sam consequently enlists the help of psychic Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). Ghost is best recognized for the pottery scene between Swayze and Moore’s characters.

Patrick Swayze Remakes

Ghost won’t be the only Swayze film to receive a remake in the next few years. In August 2022, Amazon Studios announced Spider-Man: Far from Home’s Jake Gyllenhaal would star in the upcoming reboot of the 1989 film Road House as a former UFC fighter. The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman will direct the project, and the original Road House‘s Joel Silver will return as a producer. “The original Road House has a special place in my heart, and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world,” Silver said in a statement.

A day following the announcement of Gyllenhaal’s involvement, the Road House remake cast two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor. Amazon’s re-imagining will mark McGregor’s acting debut in an undisclosed role. McGregor became interested in the reboot after watching the 1989 movie. Reportedly, the UFC fighter was “all in and loved the idea where the new story was headed compared to the original.” Before Amazon’s remake, The Notebook‘s Nick Cassavetes attempted to create a gender-swapped Road House with Ronda Rousey, but the project never came to fruition.

In 2020, Lionsgate confirmed the development of another Dirty Dancing. Jennifer Grey will reprise her role as Francis “Baby” Houseman. It’s unclear if any other actors will return, but the sequel hopes to memorialize Swayze somehow. In 2004, the ’80s classic received a prequel with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Set on the brink of the Cuban Revolution, Havana Nights stars Andor‘s Diego Luna and Atonement‘s Romola Garai. Swayze also made a brief cameo as a dance class instructor. Ultimately, Havana Nights didn’t fare well with critics for its predictable plot.

Dirty Dancing is expected to premiere in theaters on Feb. 27, 2024. There is currently no release window for Road House.
