Dakota Johnson Discusses Filming Her ‘Wild’ Spider-Man Spinoff, Madame Web

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson dishes on the experience of shooting the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, saying she learned a lot from shooting the movie.

Madame Web‘s Dakota Johnson confirms that the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff has finished shooting, suggesting the film is unlike anything she has done before.

“It was a wild experience,” the actor told Variety. “I don’t think you can be prepped to go into anything like that, but I learned so much. It’s a completely different way of making films, you know.” Variety also asked Luca Guadagnino, Johnson’s Suspiria director, what he thought of the actor’s role in Sony’s upcoming superhero movie. “If there is a Madame Web, it’s Dakota,” he said.

Johnson joined Madame Web back in February 2022. The film is set to be the sixth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe following Venom (2018), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Morbius (2022), Kraven the Hunter (Oct. 6, 2023) and El Muerto (Jan. 12, 2024). The project was originally slated for release on July 7, 2023, before moving to Oct. 6, 2023 (now reserved for Kraven), and finally settling on Feb. 16, 2024. Madame Web‘s director of photography, Duane Charles Manwiller, recently celebrated the end of filming by sharing the Spider-Man spinoff’s new logo.

Madame Web’s Mysterious Plot May Involve Time Travel

Though Johnson learned a lot while filming Madame Web, fans are still in the dark on what the film’s plot is about. Johnson is believed to be playing Cassandra Webb/Madame Web, while rumors suggest that Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney will play Julia Carpenter, a character who has held the titles of Spider-Woman and Madame Web. Other rumors list Adam Scott as Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben Parker and Emma Roberts as Peter Parker’s mother, Mary Parker. These rumors also claim that the film will follow a Terminator-esque plot in which Madame Webb attempts to prevent a time-traveling antagonist from killing a pregnant Mary Parker and her unborn future web-slinger.

Sony has yet to comment on the validity of these rumors, though leaked production images show Roberts with what appears to be a pregnant belly. Other images feature Johnson and Scott in Emergency Medical Technician uniforms, released just days before rumors of Scott’s role as Uncle Ben emerged online. The identity of the film’s main antagonist is still unknown, though photos of Tahar Rahim suggest that the actor may be playing the villainous Morlun, Ezekiel Sims or a combination of the two.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Madame Web also features Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Mike Epps and Zosia Mamet in undisclosed roles. A report from August 2022 claims the film will include two Spider-Girls, Anya Corazon (played by Merced) and Mattie Franklin (played by O’Connor). Sony has also yet to comment on the validity of this report.

Madame Web hits theaters on Feb. 16, 2024.
