Director Tommy Wirkola confirms his action film Violent Night, which stars David Harbour as Santa Claus, will be getting a sequel.

The Christmas action-comedy Violent Night is officially getting a sequel.

Director Tommy Wirkola confirmed a follow-up was in development in an interview with The Wrap. “We’re talking about it and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order,” he said. Wirkola added that the sequel won’t shoot right away and that the creative team will use the delay to hammer out the ideal script. “We have time to really crack the script and figure out the story,” he explained. “And we have some ideas, me and [screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller] and the producers, we’ve been talking about where we want to take it and what we want to see.”

What Is Violent Night?

Violent Night starred David Harbour as Santa Claus, given a new backstory as a brutal Viking warrior who gained redemption by becoming the spirit of giving and generosity. After becoming a cynical drunk due to centuries of greed and cruelty in the world, St. Nick is given the opportunity to rediscover his Christmas spirit and his ass-kicking roots when, on Dec. 24, a group of mercenaries holds an affluent New England family hostage while making his annual deliveries. The film received positive reviews for its action scenes, sense of humor and for Harbour’s performance in the lead role. It finished its theatrical run with a $76 million gross on a $20 million budget.

As for where the story could go in the sequel, Wirkola said he’s eager to explore unseen elements of the Santa Claus mythology. “There’s stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, the elves,” Wirkola said. “But story-wise I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope, but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.” Harbour himself has previously suggested Charlize Theron for Mrs. Claus, having been impressed by her performance in 2017’s Atomic Blonde.

Outside Violent Night, Harbour is known for playing Sheriff Jim Hopper on Netflix’s mega-hit Stranger Things, which is set to film its fifth and final season soon. He recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Soviet super-soldier Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in Black Widow and will reprise the role in the upcoming villain team-up vehicle Thunderbolts. Wirkola’s work in the action-comedy genre includes Dead Snow, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and The Trip. His next project is the animated musical comedy Spermageddon.

Violent Night is available to stream on Peacock.
