Dead City Features the Most ‘Awesome, Disgusting’ Walkers in The Walking Dead’s History

The Walking Dead - Season 11, Episode 1 walkers on train

Walking Dead: Dead City showrunner Eli Jorne reveals that the zombies in the upcoming spinoff series are more “disgusting” and “terrifying” than ever.

Walking Dead: Dead City showrunner Eli Jorne revealed new information about the “terrifying” walkers that will feature in The Walking Dead spinoff.

“It is one of the most awesome, disgusting, terrifying walkers that I’ve seen in the history of the show,” Jorne said in an interview with Collider. “There are a number of horrific walkers, but there is a mind-bendingly horrific walker coming up that I wasn’t on set for, and I’m glad I wasn’t.” Jorne also called the entire experience “magic.” He added, “It quite possibly will make you throw up. I would just have something handy nearby, as you watch it.”

Walking Dead: Dead City is an upcoming post-apocalyptic horror series that will serve as the fourth spinoff in the Walking Dead franchise. Featuring the characters of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) from the original The Walking Dead, Dead City will follow the characters as they navigate a post-apocalyptic Manhattan filled with the undead wreaking havoc across the city.

How New York City Factors Into The Walking Dead Spinoff

In the same interview, Jorne discussed how New York City is framed as an important character on the show and will serve as an integral part of the storytelling process. “A lot of it is situational. The universe has never really lived in a city, the way it will, and in a city like New York, especially,” Jorne said. “Just environmentally and architecturally, there are so many new ways that we can experience walkers that you couldn’t have.”

The spinoff will also focus on the relationship survivors have with the walkers and how it will differ in a larger city. “In The Walking Dead, they fought a lot of walkers in the woods, but there were a lot of stretches of woods where you could just hike and camp out. You don’t get to do that as much in the city,” Jorne said.

The six-episode spinoff will also feature cast members including Gaius Charles, Jonathan Higginbotham, Mahina Napoleon, Trey Santiago-Hudson and Charlie Solis. Dead City will premiere on AMC and will take place nearly two years after the events of The Walking Dead, which aired its series finale in November 2022. Per the official synopsis of Dead City, “While in the city, Maggie and Negan encounter native New Yorkers, evade a marshal with a troubled past, and hunt down a notorious killer. But as the pair moves deeper into the gritty depths of the walker-infested city, it becomes apparent that the traumas of their tumultuous past may prove just as great a threat as the dangers of the present. “

The Walking Dead: Dead City does not have an official release date, but is expected to premiere on AMC in April 2023.
