CBR has the exclusive unveiling of the cover art for Disney’s upcoming 4K SteelBook release of its 1950 animated classic, Cinderella.
Cinderella is coming out of the Disney Vault to celebrate a major event.
The company previously announced a special series of anniversary re-releases of some of the most beloved films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm as part of the company’s 100th-anniversary celebration. CBR has the exclusive first look at the cover artwork for the Cinderella 4K SteelBook, which captures the moment Cinderella first receives her ball gown from the Fairy Godmother. The back of the SteelBook features the iconic glass slipper while the inside shows Prince Charming meeting Cinderella. This marks the first time that Cinderella will be available to own on a 4K Ultra HD disc. The animated classic is scheduled for release on Aug. 1, 2023, alongside new SteelBooks of Beauty and the Beast and Frozen.
Based on Charles Perrault’s 1697 fairy tale of the same title, Cinderella is the 12th animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions. The musical fantasy film was released in theaters in 1950, featuring the voices of Ilene Woods, Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Rhoda Williams, James MacDonald, Luis van Rooten and Don Barclay. Cinderella was a critical and commercial success upon release, becoming Disney’s biggest hit since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2018. A live-action adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the title role was released by Disney in 2015.
Disney Cracks the Vault Open
Other animated titles that will be released as a Blu-ray SteelBook include Pixar films Coco, Toy Story and Cars (June 6), the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film Iron Man (Sept. 5) and Disney classics The Little Mermaid, Moana, The Lion King and Aladdin (Oct. 3). The latter four are considered by many fans to be among Disney’s best-animated films ever. The SteelBook release for The Little Mermaid will become available a few months after the film’s live-action remake opens in theaters and welcomes a whole new generation under the sea. A live-action remake of Moana is also in early development with fan-favorite actor Dwayne Johnson set to return as Maui. Disney previously released live-action remakes of The Lion King and Aladdin in 2019.
After 100 years, Disney remains a dominant force in the animation industry with its films continuing to attract audiences of all backgrounds. The studio’s next animated film, and 62nd overall, will be Wish, featuring the voices of Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine and Alan Tudyk. The upcoming animated musical film will focus on Asha (DeBose), a teenage girl who “makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star.” According to the synopsis for the film, “Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.” Wish is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 22.
The 4K Steelbook for Cinderella will be available to own on Aug. 1.
