Rachel McAdams recently teased that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may not be the last time fans see her character, Dr. Christine Palmer, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“You never know what’s going to happen with the MCU, right? It’s vast and endless, so — to be continued,” McAdams teased during an interview with Empire. “What I took away from it is that green-screen acting is hard. And that you have to be really fit to make a Marvel movie. I had to really tap into my figure-skating, sporty side from another life.” McAdams has so far appeared in three MCU projects: the live-action films Doctor Strange (2016) and Multiverse of Madness (2022) and the animated Disney+ series What If…? (2021).
Although McAdams has hinted that her time in the MCU remains unfinished, Marvel Studios has given no indication that Dr. Christine Palmer will return. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw her character, who is a former colleague and love of Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), get married, seemingly closing the door on Palmer rekindling her relationship with Strange. Even her Earth-838 variant, who McAdams predominantly played in the 2022 superhero film and was a former lover of her Earth’s Strange, was given closure. Furthermore, the mid-credits scene of Multiverse of Madness introduced a new love interest for Strange, the sorceress Clea, played by Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde). However, since Palmer is an emergency surgeon situated in New York City, there is always the possibility that she could cross paths with other NYC-based heroes like Daredevil or Spider-Man in need of medical attention in future MCU projects.
What’s Next for Doctor Strange?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended with the titular hero heading into the Dark Dimension with Clea to fix an incursion that he caused. At this time, it is unknown if Marvel plans for this mid-credits scene to be continued in a third Doctor Strange movie or in one of the upcoming Avengers sequels. Doctor Strange 3 is rumored to not only be in development at Marvel but already on the studio’s release schedule. However, since Marvel Studios has not yet publicly confirmed another Doctor Strange sequel, this rumor should be treated with a grain of salt for now.
Kang the Conqueror vs. Doctor Strange
Another rumor circulating online is that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will find the MCU divided into two factions — one headed by Doctor Strange and the other by Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). The trusted source claims that, unlike previous Avengers movies, Strange will be depicted not as a superhero but as a supervillain. Furthermore, it will be Kang who is trying to protect the Multiverse, not destroy it. As with the Doctor Strange 3 rumor, it is best to treat this possible storyline with a grain of salt until it is confirmed by Marvel Studios.
Doctor Strange, What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are available to stream on Disney+.
