Doctor Who Channels Bridgerton in New Cast Photos

Jonathan Groff, Millie Gibson and Ncuti Gatwa on Doctor Who.

New Doctor Who photos show the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), his companion Ruby (Millie Gibson) and series newcomer Jonathan Groff dressed in early 1800s Regency-era clothes.

The photos come from the BBC’s official Doctor Who Twitter account, which was captioned with the cryptic phrase, “Dress to impress, and beware the Duchess.” It’s an early glimpse of Gatwa, who will become the time-traveling Doctor at the end of 2023’s 60th Anniversary specials. It’s also a first look at Groff’s character after the BBC announced that the Frozen and Hamilton actor will join the show. A similar period-piece promo dropped in April, showing Gatwa and Gibson in 1960s outfits.

Groff is one of several big names attached to the upcoming episodes and specials of Doctor Who. During the announcement, the BBC only called Groff a “mysterious guest” who will “jump aboard the TARDIS” once the next season gets going. RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon will join Season 14 as a major villain deemed “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet.” Promotional photos show Monsoon’s character in a piano-themed dress. Before that, Neil Patrick Harris will guest-star as a villain in the 60th Anniversary specials, where he’ll face off against David Tennant’s newly regenerated Doctor.

A New Era for Doctor Who

While Gatwa was cast as the show’s new star in mid-2022, the final episode of Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whitaker, “The Power of the Doctor,” surprised fans by showing Whitaker regenerate into Tennant instead. It was later confirmed that the former Tenth Doctor will briefly return as the Fourteenth Doctor for three 60th Anniversary special episodes. Tennant’s former co-star Catherine Tate, who played the companion Donna Noble, will also be reprising her role. After the specials, Gatwa will take over as the Fifteenth Doctor for the next full season of the show.

The upcoming specials will also see the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies, who was in charge of the Doctor Who revival series for its first four seasons. He departed the show at the same time as Tennant and was replaced by new showrunner Steven Moffat and later Chris Chibnall. Davies said he has big plans for the show going forward, hoping to turn it into a much larger franchise with multiple spinoffs. “I watch the Star Trek empire with vast envy: the way that’s turned itself from an old archive show into something fantastic,” Davies said.

Doctor Whos 60th Anniversary specials come out in Nov. 2023, while Season 14 is scheduled to premiere sometime in late 2023.
