Neil Patrick Harris’ Doctor Who villain appears in a new 60th-anniversary trailer.
The BBC released a new preview, featuring a broadcast being hijacked before cutting to Harris’ character dancing and juggling in front of the newly regenerated 14th Doctor. While Harris’ identity remains unknown, a reversed version of the trailer unscrambles its hidden audio message, with Tennant’s Doctor warning about something “in everyone’s head.”
Harris isn’t the only major star joining Doctor Who as a villain. Last month, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon confirmed her involvement in series 14 — helmed once again by Russell T Davies — as a major foe of Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor, describing herself as, “honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who.” Like Harris, Monsoon’s character been named yet, though Doctor Who‘s Twitter page revealed a first look at their piano-themed outfit, dubbing this individual, “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet.”
The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials
The 60th Anniversary specials, meanwhile, will see the return of multiple Davies-era Doctor Who characters. Tennant, whose original Tenth Doctor tenure lasted three series and multiple specials between 2005 and 2010, will be joined by his former co-star Catherine Tate, who played companion Donna Noble in the Christmas episode “The Runaway Bride,” Doctor Who series 4, and the two-part special, “The End of Time.” Jacqueline King and the late Bernard Cribbins will also return as Donna’s mother Sylvia and grandfather Wilfred, with the anniversary special marking Cribbins’ final performance before his death last year. Doctor Who specials first trailer previewed the newly regenerated Doctor reuniting with Donna — whose memories of their friendship he erased in series 4’s “Journey’s End” — and her family, as well as glimpses of Harris’ villain and more aliens arriving on Earth.
Gatwa’s Doctor, meanwhile, will be joined next year by Millie Gibson as the Time Lord’s newest companion Ruby Sunday. The BBC recently unveiled a look at the duo wearing 1960s-inspired costumes, though it’s unknown which episode of series 14 will focus on this time period and attire. Frozen star Jonathan Groff, who recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, will also be joining series 14 as a “mysterious guest,” but the BBC didn’t reveal when his character might appear on the show. Additionally, Davies alluded to the return of potential Doctor Who spinoffs, having previously developed the adult-oriented Torchwood and family-friendly The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
Doctor Who‘s 60th Anniversary specials are expected to premiere in late 2023.
