Hollywood icon Dolph Lundgren recently revealed that he’s been battling cancer for the past eight years.
Speaking on the series In Depth with Graham Bensinger, the movie star addressed his health, noting that he was initially diagnosed in 2015. “They found a tumor… they didn’t know what it was, just a tumor in my kidney and they took it out here in LA in 2015 but then they did a biopsy and it was cancerous,” Lundgren explained. “And then I did scans every six months and then a year and it was fine for five years.” The actor elaborates that while he was cancer-free during that period, doctors discovered several more growths in 2020. “I was back in Sweden and I had some kind of acid reflux… So I did an MRI and they found that there were a few more tumors around that area.”
Lundgren elaborates that he underwent surgery to remove the tumors and was gearing up to direct and star in a new film when his doctor discovered another tumor in his liver. “At that point, it hit me that this is something serious,” Lundgren said. When he was signed to film Expendables 4 and Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom in 2021, the actor’s doctor told him that even more cancerous growths were discovered in his lungs and kidney and advised him to take a break and spend more time with his family. “So I asked him, ‘How long do you think I have left?’ and he said… I think he said two or three years but I could tell in his voice that he probably thought it was less,” he explained.
Lundgren’s Hope for the Future
Lundgren continues that he eventually sought a second opinion from a different doctor who identified a mutation in one of his tumors that allowed for the use of a particular treatment that could adequately target the cancer; after starting the process, the growths had begun to shrink up to 30%. “So 2022 was basically watching these medications do their thing and finally things had shrunk by about 90%. Now we’re in the process of taking out the remaining scar tissue of these tumors,” Lundgren said. The actor concluded that he’s hopeful that his current treatment will keep his cancer suppressed and expressed gratitude for everyone that helped during the process.
Starring iconic productions such as Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe, The Punisher and Universal Soldier, Lundgren is one of the most recognizable action stars of all time. In recent years, he’s been a staple of The Expendables franchise and has a supporting role in the DC Universe’s Aquaman films. He also held a brief recurring role as the villainous Konstantine Kovar in the popular CW series Arrow.
