Drew Barrymore put her braces and prom dress from Never Been Kissed back on for a crossover sketch like no other.
The former child star turned adult actor and talk show host took part in the opening pre-taped segment of the 2023 MTV Movie and Television Awards. Reprising her memorable role as Josie Geller from the 1999 romantic comedy Never Been Kissed, Barrymore re-created her image from the ’80s teen flashback scenes from the film and played her character in nods to the biggest hits of 2022. Among the movies and television shows that Barrymore appears in are Smile, Nope, Wednesday and Top Gun: Maverick. The segment ends with Barrymore coming in contact with Cocaine Bear and saying her iconic Never Been Kissed line, “I’m not Josie Grossie anymore!”
Drew Barrymore Won’t Ditch Josie
This is not the first time Barrymore has reprised the Josie role. In 2020, the actor put the pink prom gown, braces and scrunchie back on for a “Drew’s News” segment of The Drew Barrymore Show. Stepping out on stage, Josie Grossie appeared as if she had no memory of events after 1988. Barrymore would go on to occasionally take up the character for interviews with guests, asking questions as Josie Grossie.
Initially, Barrymore was set to host the 2023 MTV Movie and Television Awards and pre-taped the crossover segment along with a parody of the upcoming Barbie movie. When the Writers Guild of America strike took place, however, Barrymore showed her support for the WGA by stepping down as host. The strike has already halted several productions including Stranger Things Season 5 and Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot.
Barrymore was one of the biggest child stars of the 1980s, following her performance as Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. in 1982. After dealing with tough times personally and professionally, Barrymore bounced back in the 90s in such hits as Batman Forever, Scream and The Wedding Singer. Barrymore’s career was elevated by the box office hit Never Been Kissed, in which she played a Chicago reporter infiltrating a high school where she finds popularity and love with an English teacher.
Barrymore has experienced a career resurgence after spending the last decade away from the screen. While her talk show remains her current day job, Barrymore has expressed interest in a third Charlie’s Angels movie, and more surprisingly, a potential reprisal of her dead character Casey Becker from Scream in a future installment.
