Druig actor Barry Keoghan shares his thoughts on why Marvel Studios’ Eternals movie received mixed reviews from both critics and fans.
Golden Globe nominee Barry Keoghan, who played Druig in Marvel Studios’ Eternals, addressed the mixed fan reception to Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao’s first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor was asked about his thoughts on the mixed responses that Eternals received during its theatrical run in 2021. Keoghan said that this reaction might be due to the story’s unfamiliarity and Zhao’s unique way of storytelling. “I think Chloe [Zhao] brought a whole kind of feel to it,” Keoghan said. “You know? So Chloe brings — as you’ve seen from her past films — raw performances and really, really touching performances. I don’t think it was… I think it was new. I think it was just new. It was new for the Marvel world.”
Despite having a star-studded cast and epic visuals, reviews for Eternals claim that the film failed to live up to audience expectations and garnered criticisms for its pacing and character development. At the time of writing, Eternals currently holds an approval rating of 47% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, making it the lowest-rated MCU movie to date.
Is Marvel Studios Planning an Eternals Sequel?
Whether Marvel Studios will develop a sequel to Eternals remains unconfirmed. In August 2022, Pip the Troll voice actor Patton Oswalt seemingly confirmed the project’s existence, saying, “They have announced there’s going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it. So, hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.” Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed Oswalt’s statement.
Kingo actor Kumail Nanjiani downplayed Oswalt’s announcement and admitted that he has “no idea” about the rumored project. “I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one,” Nanjiani said. “They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything.”
While Eternals 2 remains unconfirmed, Nanjiani’s character, Kingo, has appeared in the background of recent MCU projects. Introduced as both an Eternal and a famous Bollywood star, Kingo can be seen on a movie poster in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and was mentioned in Disney+’s Ms. Marvel as the favorite actor of Kamala Khan’s (Iman Vellani) mother. Similarly, Harry Styles, who appeared as Starfox in an Eternals post-credit scene, is expected to reprise the role in a future project. “We didn’t cast Harry for a tag,” said Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore. “(There’s) more stories to be told with that character.”
Eternals is now available for streaming on Disney+.
