Frank Grillo recently revealed that he accidentally punched Ryan Reynolds in the face while filming the 2021 action comedy film, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

The actor shared the story during a recent appearance on Michal Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. “I punched Ryan Reynolds in the face,” Grillo admitted. “There’s a scene where it’s Ryan [Reynolds], Sam [Jackson], and Selma [Hayek], and we have them tied up. Their hands are behind their back, and I’m coming in to interrogate him. I’m the detective, and he’s doing his thing when he yaps, you know, and I punch him in the face, right? So, I take a swing, and he goes, ‘Grillo, do not punch me in the face’. I go, ‘Brother, I’ve been boxing since I was 11. I’m not going to punch you in the face. Just don’t lean in.’ First take, I clip him right in the chin.”

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a sequel to the 2017 film The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Besides Grillo and Reynolds, the film stars several popular actors like Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion), Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight), Salma Hayek (Eternals) and Richard E. Grant (Loki). Grillo played Bobby O’Neill, a Boston-based agent working with Interpol, in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

While Grillo has been acting since 1992, he broke out in the 2010s with roles in The Grey, The Purge: Anarchy and Animal Kingdom. However, he is perhaps best known among comic book fans for his role as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and animated series What If…? (2021).

Frank Grillo Believes the MCU Wasted Crossbones

In a recent interview, Grillo remarked that he was disappointed with how Crossbones had been portrayed in the MCU: “They never told a story [about Crossbones]. The mythology of the MCU and just what Marvel has in its pool of characters, it’s so deep. Crossbones was there for a minute, but he was supposed to be there longer, then they went the direction they did.” Crossbones was killed in Civil War but Grillo returned to portray alternate variants in Endgame and What If…? “I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very fucking short amount of time, I think there’s more there,” he continued. “I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.”

Frank Grillo Joins the DC Universe

Disappointed with his time in the MCU, Grillo sought out a more prominent role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. After months of rumors, Grillo was officially announced to be playing Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos, as well as in any future animated and live-action DCU projects. Rick Flag Sr. will lead the titular black ops team of monsters that was assembled by A.R.G.U.S. agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Production is already underway on the first season of Creature Commandos, which will consist of seven episodes.

Creature Commandos will release on HBO Max. The series does not have a premiere date at this time but is expected to be the first project released as part of Chapter 1 of the DCU.
