Iconic villain Ghostface responds to Scream star Jenna Ortega’s tweet marking the movie’s anniversary, teasing their Scream VI rematch.

Scream star Jenna Ortega was recently trolled by Ghostface after celebrating the one-year anniversary of the slasher franchise’s fifth installment on Twitter.

Ortega, who plays Tara Carpenter, found herself firmly in Ghostface’s sights after she retweeted the official Scream account’s anniversary announcement with the caption “Happy birthday you big baby.” Replying to Ortega’s tweet, the iconic movie villain (brought to life by Paramount’s social media team) ominously inquired whether Ortega was “ready for round 2” in upcoming sequel Scream VI. Ghostface’s tweet was accompanied by a still from Scream (2022) of Ghostface attacking a terrified Tara as she takes cowers behind a door.

Ghostface’s apparent eagerness to face off against Ortega and her co-stars follows reports that Scream VI will be the goriest entry in the franchise yet. Ortega’s on-screen half-sister Melissa Barrera said as much in a recent interview, warning that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett weren’t holding back in the sequel. “There was a saying on set because Matt and Tyler were always asking for more blood and more sweat. They always just wanted more,” she said. “‘More blood spritz’ was the saying because they would just always want more. With the last Scream, they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay. But with this one, they were like, ‘We’re going all out.'”

Jenna Ortega Discusses Scream VI

Scream VI will make room for more than just gruesome set pieces, though. According to Ortega, the sixth installment in the long-running franchise also includes devotes plenty of screen time to character development, particularly where Tara is concerned. Ortega recently promised fans a more three-dimensional portrayal of Tara in Scream VI, saying that her scenes involve more than “crying and screaming on the floor” in the sequel. “I had to interact with my other cast mates and give [Tara] some sort of a personality,” she said. Ortega added that this meant filming Scream VI was “a lot more intense” than her experience working on 2022’s Scream.

Tara getting more time to shine in Scream VI is likely the direct result of franchise protagonist Sidney Prescott’s absence from the movie, after actor Neve Campbell declined to reprise the role in June 2022. Ortega touched on Campbell’s exit in a recent interview, suggesting fans will be too engrossed by Scream VI‘s grisly action to notice Sidney was missing. “I feel like I can’t really speak too much on that just because it’s not necessarily my character,” she said. “But I will say there’s so much going on in this next one, that it’s so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you’re gonna be distracted almost.”

Scream (2022) is currently streaming on Paramount+. Scream VI arrives in theaters on March 10, 2023.
