More than a week after its theatrical release, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to dominate theaters all around the world including China, with a current gross of over $520 million at the global box office. Because of this, the movie currently holds the title of Phase Five’s highest-grossing film, outperforming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantuamania’s whole theatrical run which only earned a worldwide gross of over $475 million.

In addition to Pratt’s Star-Lord and Vin Diesel’s Groot, Vol. 3 features the return of Dave Bautista’s Drax, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Pom Klemetieff’s Mantis, Bradley Cooper’s Rocket, and Sean Gunn’s Kraglin. Their mission requires them to save Rocket from his ruthless creator, the High Evolutionary, as their resident tech genius’ tragic origins finally come to light.

In a previous interview, Gunn and Pratt addressed the third installment’s darker tone compared to the first two installments, revealing that the story has “matured in its emotionality” in order to keep up with their aging audience. “The kids who loved Guardians were teenagers, and now they’re in their mid-twenties, and it’s really exciting to think that they’re ready for this movie the way that they might not have been nine years ago,” Pratt said.

James Gunn Closes Trilogy With an Epic Dance Number

Music and dancing have been a major part of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise since the first installment in 2014, which introduced Star-Lord’s signature mixtape and his unexpected dance challenge that led to Ronan’s defeat. Gunn decides to honor this unique part of the franchise by ending Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Rocket, Nebula, Groot, and Drax dancing to the tune of Florence + The Machine’s iconic song “Dog Days Are Over,” which Gunn praised as “the greatest pop song of the 21st century.”

According to Gunn, filming the final scene of his beloved MCU trilogy was definitely “a high point” in his life, describing it as a “surreal, and beautiful, and wonderful” moment on set. “We’ve been goofing around and playing with Fisher-Price characters since we were kids in our parents’ basement, and now we’re on the biggest set I’ve ever been on with gigantic Tinker Toys instead of smaller ones, but with that same purity and imagination we had as kids,” he said. “Everybody was crying as it was happening. It was a really powerful moment.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters worldwide.
