The latest trailer for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai gives fans a peek at the story of the upcoming animated prequel.
The video sets the stages for an action-packed story as it reveals how Sam Wing, whom fans of the Gremlins franchise will recognize, meets Gizmo. After revealing that the Mogwai live in a secret, magical haven the trailer elaborates on the rules needed to ensure the tiny creatures don’t turn into rampaging monsters. Unfortunately for the people of Shanghai, that’s exactly what the sinsiter Riley Greene (Matthew Rhys) plans on doing with the critters, with the end goal of eventually taking over the world. Gizmo and Sam will need to learn to trust one another as they take down an army of ravenous Gremlins and thwart the villain’s plans.
Based on the ever-popular 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Secrets of the Mogwai is set many years before these stories and will largely tell the origin story of Gizmo and Sam Wing, the elderly shop owner from the first movie. Warner Bros. Discovery promises that the show will provide a satisfying opening chapter to the saga as the duo embark on a quest across the “Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.”
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai premieres on HBO Max on May 23.
