Though James Gunn appears to be done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe — for now, at least — as he and Peter Safran build up the new DC Universe, the director and writer still pulled out all the stops with his swan song, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Ahead of the film’s release in theaters, it was revealed that several versions of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will hit various theaters, each utilizing different combinations of aspect ratios. Gunn’s unprecedented work on delivering unique visual experiences to Marvel fans is just one way the director continues to show his dedication to the medium. While Gunn has jumped from working on everything from Scooby-Doo to Slither to The Suicide Squad, his films always focus on the fine details of screen and sound. It’s this passion for the film-going experience which has led the creator to champion ScreenX and the unique theatrical experience it provides audiences.
James Gunn Wants Fans to See Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in ScreenX
ScreenX, similar to IMAX, has to be formatted either while shooting a movie or during post-production through a conversion process. This unique way of filming results in truly immersive and seismic sights and sounds. Audiences are treated to panoramic visuals thanks to three screens that cover 270 degrees, providing an astounding theatrical experience. Given the singular nature of the format, it’s no wonder Gunn is a fan.
“I really think ScreenX may be the future of cinema,” Gunn said about the technology. “I think it’s great to have something that really surrounds you in a real way. We’ve had sounds surround us in movie theaters, hearing it from different directions, so why not broaden out what we’re seeing on the screen, too? Make us feel like we’re really in that environment, and completely immerse ourselves in that screen?”
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Is a True Thrill Ride
Like the MCU’s Black Panther before it and the recent box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s use of ScreenX allowed its filmmakers a chance to show off all their hard work to audiences. Details that might otherwise go unnoticed can be brought to staggering life thanks to the format, something Gunn is over the moon about.
“What I’m most excited about with ScreenX is a lot of our sets and big scenes,” Gunn said. “We have this wonderful set design by Beth Nickel, like when you go into the Orgascope, which is this gigantic satellite that’s grown from organic matter. And I think the outer space stuff should be super cool, jumping out in their different colored astronaut suits. I think ScreenX is perfect for that.”
For fans eager to get the most out of what could be the final Guardians of the Galaxy movie for many heroes, a ScreenX version of the film is a must. Gunn’s work to bring an explosive and heart-wrenching end to the Guardians trilogy deserves to be seen in all its glory on a truly bleeding-edge format like ScreenX.
