While his brother and the film’s writer/director, James, teased there would be major deaths in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Kraglin Obfonteri actor Sean Gunn spoke about the surprisingly happier ending which saw all the members of the eponymous team still alive and kicking.
Sean touched upon this while speaking to ComicBook.com, saying the cast had no problems with internet rumors about the deaths in the movies because one “[doesn’t] want people knowing where stuff is going.” However, regarding the likelihood of there being truth to the body count in Guardians 3, Sean commented, “I know James toyed with it at various times, so it was like maybe so-and-so would die. And then just, in the course of figuring out the story, it just didn’t make sense for anyone. And I like where everyone lands, and it’s true, it’s a finality of sorts for a lot of the characters without death, which is pretty interesting to me too.”
The Future of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Members
While the Guardians made it out of their franchise’s swan song alive, the team’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently unknown. Prior to Guardians of the Galaxy 3‘s release, James Gunn shared his hope that Marvel Studios used the surviving Guardians members in future projects, remarking, “It would absolutely not be disloyal of them to me to continue on in the Marvel Universe. I would love to see any characters that remain [at the end of the film] get solo movies, or join the Avengers, or a new version of the Guardians, or whatever.”
James also recently revealed he and Marvel have discussed Guardians of the Galaxy‘s future, albeit without sharing any details. Any upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy-releated continuations or spinoffs, though, may not include the filmmaker’s involvement, as he is currently the co-CEO and co-president of DC Studios.
Though the future of most of the Guardians remains in question, it was confirmed that Peter Quill/Star-Lord will be back. The character’s actor, Chris Pratt, previously delved into the possibility of reprising the role, stating it would be “strange to continue [Star Lord’s] story” without James Gunn. “So, to continue to tell the story,” continued Pratt, “it would really be important to honor what he’s done in the first three films and to honor what the fans have grown to love about the character and not simply do it because people might show up to pay for it.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.
