Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 crossed a major milestone at the worldwide box office in its second weekend in theaters.
According to Deadline, the Marvel Studios threequel surpassed the half-a-billion checkpoint and has earned an estimated global total of $528.8 million. $213.2 million of that total is from domestic earnings, while $315.6 million is from the international box office. Vol. 3‘s worldwide earnings make it the second-largest worldwide Hollywood release of 2023. Internationally, the film is on track to surpass the total earnings of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the first entry in the series, which earned $318 million.
While Vol. 3 has suffered a 40% drop from its opening to its second weekend, this is still better than other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, including the original Guardians, its 2017 sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Despite this worldwide box office milestone, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. remains the best opening weekend of the trilogy, with a domestic total of $146 million in its premiere weekend, with a global box office haul of over $427 million the same weekend. Comparatively, Vol. 3 earned $114 million domestically in its first weekend, with a global tally of $282.1 million.
GOTG Vol. 3 Closes Out the MCU Trilogy
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the final entry in the MCU trilogy, which has been written and directed by James Gunn. While the film is the final iteration of this particular team of Guardians, Gunn has addressed the possibility of the team continuing in some capacity in a future MCU project. “It would absolutely not be disloyal of them to me to continue on in the Marvel Universe,” he said, adding that he would “love to see any characters that remain get solo movies, or join the Avengers, or a new version of the Guardians, or whatever.”
In a previous interview, Gunn promised that Vol. 3 would not only subvert audience expectations but also strike a darker tone than the films before it. Since its release, some audience members have called the film’s PG-13 rating into question, with others describing it as “disturbing,” “dark,” and “brutal.”
Vol. 3 follows the Guardians as they embark on a dangerous mission to save Rocket Raccoon’s life. Gunn has previously revealed that he considers Rocket to be the “secret protagonist of the Guardians movies,” and that Vol. 3 is largely a vehicle to properly wrap up the character’s story arc. “I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together. I just think that his [trauma] is more extreme than others.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sees the return of Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Vin Diesel as Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.
