Harry Potter’s Dudley Dursley Actor Is Ready to Move On

Harry Melling is portraying the role of Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films.

English actor Harry Melling wishes to move on from his past Harry Potter role as Harry’s spoiled cousin Dudley Dursley.

Harry Potter alum Harry Melling has opened up about his wish to move on from the blockbuster franchise, seemingly dismissing the possibility of reprising Dudley Dursley.

While speaking with NME, the English actor explained his desire to be recognized for his other works, instead of only being defined by a role he did when he was young. “It’s always going to be there and I accept that,” Melling said. “I would just like the conversation to be about what I’m doing now as opposed to something I did when I was 10. I guess it’s like if you [points a finger semi-accusingly to the interview], were asked about an article you wrote when you were 10. How would you feel about that?”

For ten years, Melling starred as Harry Potter’s spoiled cousin Dudley across five films. Like some of the original cast members, the first installment, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, also served as his acting debut. In 2022, HBO Max released a Harry Potter special which reunited the leading cast for the first time in over ten years since the theatrical release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. For reasons unknown, The Pale Blue Eye star was one of the few key people who didn’t appear in the reunion special.

What’s in Store for the Harry Potter Franchise?

Following the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, it has been reported that the new management is looking to capitalize on Warner Bros. Pictures’ big franchise properties including the Harry Potter films. “We’re going to have a real focus on franchises…We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav stated. “We haven’t done a Harry Potter movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures over the last 25 years.”

One of the rumored Harry Potter projects that might be in development is the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, based on the Broadway play written by Jack Thorne. It takes place nearly two decades after the events of Deathly Hallows. The story follows Harry and Ginny’s son Albus Severus, who has been sorted into Slytherin where he forms a friendship with Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius.

Radcliffe also previously expressed his disinterest in returning for a potential Cursed Child film since it has only been a decade since he last portrayed the iconic character. “I’m never going to say never, but the Star Wars guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”

All eight installments of Harry Potter are available for streaming on HBO Max.
