The Legend of Vox Machina star Ashley Johnson promises fans that the upcoming second season will get into “the nitty-gritty” of its source material.
The Legend of Vox Machina star Ashley Johnson recently explained how Season 2 leans into the Prime Video series’ Dungeons & Dragons roots.
Johnson insisted the second season will “get more into the nitty-gritty of the characters… their interpersonal relationships, their backstories” in an interview with Variety. “This season almost feels in some ways closer to the game,” she said. “I feel like it’s sillier and it’s darker — and it’s bigger and badder. I feel like everything is just turned to 11.” The Legend of Vox Machina is based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons live-play web series Critical Role. As such, its band of adventurers evolved over the course of Critical Role Campaign One’s 115-episode run, with these characterizations carried across to the animated adaptation.
This includes the portrayal of Johnson’s character Pike Trickfoot, whom Johnson previously noted serves as the voice of reason in both Critical Role and The Legend of Vox Machina. “I feel like she’s kind of just the mother hen who’s getting stressed out… just like, ‘Come on, everybody, just stop doing stupid shit! Let’s all get on the same page and, you know, fight the world together.’ Pike is the first RPG character that I’ve ever played, and she’s got so much of me in her. I think about what Pike turned into at our table, and I love being able to explore that more in the series and sort of showing Pike’s funny side. It’s an absolute blast,” she said.
The Legend of Vox Machina S2 Trailer is Here
Pike’s “mother hen” mentality will continue to play an important part in the party’s survival if The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2’s latest trailer is anything to go by. The trailer confirms that the show’s next batch of episodes will pit our heroes against the Chroma Conclave, a formidable quartet of chrome-coated dragons bent on dominating the continent of Tal’Dorei. It won’t be all gloom and doom in The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2, though. The trailer also spotlights the animated series’ comedy elements, including gags lifted directly from Critical Role Campaign One.
This still leaves plenty of material left for The Legend of Vox Machina to adapt, and fortunately for fans, even more episodes are on the way. Amazon Studios renewed The Legend of Vox Machina for a third season in October 2022, as part of the second season’s release date announcement.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 arrives on Prime Video on Jan. 20, 2023, and will run for 12 episodes.
