James Cameron’s Avatar Sequels Won’t Feature Vin Diesel, Despite Rumors

Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto looks on at the cast of Avatar

Despite posting an Instagram video from the set back in 2019, Vin Diesel will not be appearing in James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels.

Even though it appeared that Vin Diesel might be featured in James Cameron’s Avatar sequels due to an Instagram video the actor posted from the set, a producer on the films is dispelling those rumors.

During a chat with Empire, producer Jon Landau addressed a 2019 Instagram video that Diesel posted from the film’s set that made it look like he may have nabbed a role in one of the upcoming sequels. As it turns out, the Fast and Furious actor is just a big fan and wanted to see what they came up with while filming. Landau said, “Vin was a fan. He came in, visited the set one day to see what we were doing and people took that out of context.”

Vin Diesel Stars in Two Other Major Franchises

Even though the actor won’t be making a trip to Pandora, Diesel is already a part of two mega franchises that are set to make a splash this summer. The actor recently teased that the trailer for Fast X would arrive soon. The tenth installment, which will end the multi-billion dollar franchise with a two-part finale, is expected to hit screens on May 19. Diesel will also be returning as the voice of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to be the final film of that franchise as well. The Marvel Cinematic Universe release hits screens just ahead of Fast X on May 5.

Avatar 2 Smashes Box Office Records

The Avatar sequels will become a reality now that Avatar: The Way of Water has made a killing at the box office. The long-awaited sequel topped the chart for the fifth weekend in a row after a strong showing of $40 million over the 4-day MLK weekend. The film’s domestic total now stands at $572.4 million and $1.89 billion worldwide. Now that the sequel is on its way to making a profit, Cameron said he has no choice but to begin work on the sequels. The Titanic director said, “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels… I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing in movie theaters nationwide.
