Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn recently shared a video celebrating the extras who wore the humanimal/alien costumes in the threequel.
The video, which Gunn posted to his Instagram account, features three extras dressed as anthropomorphic bug-eyed aliens telling Gunn, who is offscreen, about the many roles they have played so far during the filming of Vol. 3. Each extra stated that they have played four humanimals, ranging from kangaroo and turtle to vampire bat, monkey and rabbit. After Gunn asked them which costume/makeup is the least comfortable out of the characters, all three agreed that it was the bug-eyed one because “it’s hot out.” The director closed out the video by thanking the extras and telling them, “We appreciate you guys, thank you.”
Humanimals were hybrid creatures created by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a scientist who sought to create a perfect society filled with a “special race” of anthropomorphized animal lifeforms. Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) was one of the High Evolutionary’s earlier test subjects, but he escaped after learning that the High Evolutionary planned on dissecting him to study his brain.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has several gruesome flashbacks depicting animal torture, which has led to some controversy among the fandom about the nature of the scenes and if they were PG-13 appropriate. However, Miriam Shor, who plays the High Evolutionary’s advisor Recorder Vin, revealed that Gunn believed the scenes were necessary to show how high the stakes were for the Guardians. “Like, if you’re a bad guy in these movies, you can’t pull your punches, because it doesn’t work. But there was definitely a moment where I was like, ‘I don’t think that kids are gonna let me come home after they see this movie,” Shor said.
Another $100 Million Opening Weekend for Marvel
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 topped the box office in its opening weekend, debuting to $118.4 million. While that number is below the opening of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million), it is ahead of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened to $94.3 million stateside. Vol. 3‘s $100 million opening is the second Phase 5 title to achieve that milestone after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened to $106.1 million back in February.
Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Return?
As of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, only “the legendary Star-Lord” was confirmed to return in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. However, the threequel did conclude with the introduction of a new Guardians team that features Rocket, Groot, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo and Phyla. Marvel Studios has not revealed at this time whether it plans on developing a fourth Guardians movie, which would not be written and directed by Gunn since he is now exclusive to DC Studios for the foreseeable future.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently playing in theaters.
