Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn explains why he cast Will Poulter over an actor like Tom Cruise as the MCU’s Adam Warlock.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn has explained why Will Poulter was cast as Adam Warlock in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
“People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock,'” said Gunn in an interview with Empire. “I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future.” While Poulter is so far only confirmed to appear as Warlock in the upcoming threequel, Gunn has teased that “He could become this really important character” in the MCU moving forward.
Marvel fans first learned that Poulter had been cast as Adam Warlock in October 2021. However, it wasn’t until December 2022 that fans got their first look at the MCU’s Adam Warlock, with the cosmic character briefly appearing in the first trailer for the upcoming threequel. Adam Warlock’s impending MCU arrival was first teased in one of the post-credits scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) when Sovereign High Priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) revealed his cocoon, which was inspired by his original Fantastic Four introduction.
Are the Guardians Embarking on Their Final Mission?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 picks up shortly after the events of the 2022 Disney+ holiday special, with Peter Quill/Star-Lord still reeling from the loss of the original Gamora. However, when the universe once again needs protecting, Star-Lord rallies together his beloved band of misfits for a “mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.” Gunn, who has written and directed all three Guardians films for the MCU, has repeatedly stated that Vol. 3 will be “the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” with the franchise’s actors also teasing that they may not return to the MCU as their respective characters following this film’s release.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn and Maria Bakalova star in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the titular cosmic team, reprising their roles from previous MCU projects as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Mantis, Groot, Rocket, Kraglin and Cosmo the Spacedog, respectively. Rounding out the threequel’s cast are Poulter as Adam Warlock, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in theaters on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
