DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn denied he was the DC Universe counterpart to the veteran president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.
The acclaimed director dismissed the comparisons between himself and Feige, claiming they oversaw different responsibilities in their respective studios. Gunn believed DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran was a better counterpart to Feige, with Gunn stating that he was instead focused on the creative aspects of the DCU. “It’s actually a little different,” Gunn said. “I mean, number one, DC Studios is a studio, so it’s a little bit different. Peter Safran does a lot of what Kevin Feige does. A lot of what I do is, I just work on the creative side of things. So mapping out the stories and the creative side of the universe is my job. Much more so than some of the more administrative, executive-type stuff. And Kevin has to do both.”
While Gunn might not share the same responsibilities as Feige, there is still a lot riding on his and Safran’s upcoming reboot of the DCU. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav previously expressed confidence with the heads of DC Studios, with Zaslav claiming he expected the cinematic universe to be a major growth driver for the company. “We are very bullish on DC,” he said. “The [Superman: Legacy] script’s first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from God. It is really a good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth.”
James Gunn’s DC Universe
Gunn previously revealed he had no intention of retreading storylines from Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe. He further claimed he wanted to use the DC reboot as a chance to explore different elements of beloved DC characters. Gunn further believed it wouldn’t have made sense to reboot the universe if they only intended to repeat previous adaptations, and that DC Studios needed to respect the characters’ histories while exploring new avenues to truly thrive as a studio.
Gunn also admitted he intended to work on the DCU alongside some of the actors he’d befriended during his time at Marvel Cinematic Universe. The co-CEO has specifically mentioned he planned on bringing over several key cast members from the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, such as actors Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff.
The first film of Gunn’s DCU reboot, Superman: Legacy, flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
