Joker: Folie à Deux star Lady Gaga hints on social media that she has started filming for Todd Phillips’ highly-anticipated sequel film.
Singer and actor Lady Gaga appears to have finally reached the set of Joker: Folie à Deux, the highly-anticipated sequel to director Todd Phillips’ widely successful 2019 film.
On social media, Lady Gaga shared an image of herself with a bouquet of flowers to thank her supporters for helping her earn an Academy Award for her song, “Hold My Hand,” a part of Top Gun: Maverick’s soundtrack. In her post, she wrote, “So grateful for the magic of music and cinema. Love you my co-writer [BloodPop] I’m on set filming now big love to little monsters!” While the artist did not specify that it was the set of Joker: Folie à Deux, it’s worth noting she does not have any other announced film appearances.
Lady Gaga was officially announced as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux back in August 2022, following rumors of her involvement. The announcement came with a short teaser featuring silhouette figures of both the titular Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn dancing, though no official footage from the unproduced film was released.
Joker and Harley Quinn
Following the release of a single still from filming, featuring Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck, director Todd Phillips assured audiences that images of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn would appear, but after the actor had actually begun filming. At the time, Phillips stated Lady Gaga would begin filming after the New Year, making the artist’s recent announcement on social media more likely to be referring to the Joker sequel.
Also known as Harleen Quinzel, the Joker’s former partner in crime was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Harley Quinn was introduced in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series. Her unprecedented popularity eventually led to her introduction in the comics. Prior to becoming a supervillain, Quinn was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. She fell in love with the Joker and began helping him in his crimes. Her relationship with Joker is recognized as an abusive one and more recent depictions of her both on television and in comics have explored that aspect of her.
Joker was released in 2019 to mixed reviews but huge financial success, earning $1.07 billion at the box office worldwide. The weeks leading up to the release saw a significant controversy centered on the depiction of the film’s titular character and his violent actions, with some arguing that the actions of Arthur Fleck and the film’s sympathetic view toward him would encourage real-world acts of violence.
