Star Trek fans have created a petition calling on Paramount+ to greenlight Star Trek: Legacy.

The Change.org petition for the proposed Star Trek: Picard spinoff sequel series currently sits at an impressive 50,141 signatures at the time of writing and continues to steadily grow. “We Want A Star Trek Legacy show Spinoff of Picard Season 3 with the wonderful characters that have been created and we would like Terry Matalas to be the Showrunner,” reads the petition. “[Season 3 of Picard] has already set up the idea and characters to continue the story with a Next, Next Generation.” The petition goes on to state that Legacy would allow Matalas “to build upon the themes already created in the Picard series and allow him to continue telling the Star Trek story moving into the 25th Century.”

What Is Star Trek: Legacy?

Star Trek: Legacy is the working title of a proposed Picard spinoff sequel series that would chart the exploits of the intergenerational crew of the newly-christened USS Enterprise-G. Although the series finale of Picard, “The Last Generation,” teased a possible spinoff, Matalas previously revealed that the episode wasn’t written as a backdoor pilot for Legacy but was instead meant to give the “feeling that it could go on, that it was a passing of the torch of the last generation to the next. That I really wanted.”

Matalas continued, “I think that’s the spirit of Star Trek, that they’re going to continue exploring strange new worlds. That’s a feeling of hope. So you want to get just a little taste of what that might be — for it to be a satisfying ending, it needed to be a satisfying beginning. Having said that, of course, I want to see Jack [Crusher] and Seven [of Nine] and Sidney [La Forge] and Raffi [Musiker] and everybody go on forever.” Despite the positive response Star Trek: Legacy has received from fans, Paramount has yet to greenlight anything related to the idea.

The Future Looks Bright for Star Trek on Paramount+

Star Trek: Legacy may not be on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean that the beloved sci-fi franchise is going anywhere. Paramount+ has several Star Trek projects in the works including a Starfleet Academy series and a Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character she previously played on Star Trek: Discovery. New seasons of Strange New Worlds, Prodigy and Lower Decks are also on the way, ensuring fans that Star Trek is here to stay on Paramount+ for at least the next couple of years.

All three seasons of Star Trek: Picard are available to stream on Paramount+.
