The search for who will star as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in writer-director James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is advancing to the screen test stage.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pearl actor David Corenswet is a top contender to play the DC Universe’s new Man of Steel, and is advancing to screen tests set to occur after Memorial Day. As for the love of Clark’s life and The Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Sex Education actor Emma Mackey, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan, Bridgerton actor Phoebe Dynevor and Ready or Not star Samara Weaving have all reportedly been contenders for the role. However, THR does not have details regarding who will be undergoing screen tests. Its sources claim that some names are only part of a “chatroom list,” and that DC Studios is “nowhere near a decision.”

THR also mentions Euphoria actor Jacob Elordi, who was rumored to be the DCU’s new Superman back in early Jan. 2023. This was before Superman: Legacy was officially announced at the end of the month, and THR’s sources now say that Elordi never entered the race for the part. Gunn previously responded to the Superman rumor involving the actor, tweeting in January, “My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t.”

Superman: Legacy Begins Filming in January

Although unconfirmed by Gunn as of writing, the DC Studios co-CEO handed in his first draft for Superman: Legacy prior to the Writers Guild of America going on strike May 2. Gunn is both writing and directing Superman: Legacy, which will serve as the first official project of the new DCU that Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are mapping out. Shooting on Superman: Legacy is set to begin in Jan. 2024, but the film is not slated to release until the Summer of 2025.

Who Else May Appear in Superman: Legacy?

As for other characters in Superman: Legacy, Gunn has confirmed that another fan-favorite, Superman’s best pal Jimmy Olsen, will appear. While the movie’s main villain remains unknown, THR mentions that X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult is currently the only name on the list to play Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor. However, Deadline’s Justin Kroll has tweeted against this, claiming Hoult is in the running to play Superman instead. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider previously said he heard that Lex Luthor will be in Superman: Legacy though.

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters July 11, 2025.
