The Little Mermaid also stars Javier Bardem as King Triton, Ariel’s overprotective father, and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, the mother of Prince Eric and a character who is entirely original to the live-action adaptation. Dumezweni previously opened up about the story at the heart of The Little Mermaid, saying, “It’s this sense of the babies being two outsiders of their origin story and then finding each other… There’s that sense of, ‘We recognize each other when we know what each other’s been through.”

Bailey has also discussed the concepts that are core to the film, and more specifically her role of Princess Ariel. “I’m really excited for my version of the film because we’ve definitely changed that perspective of just [Ariel] wanting to leave the ocean for a boy,” Bailey explained. “It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants… I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.”

Bailey has also opened up about the racist backlash her casting as Ariel has received, saying, “As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore.” Bailey added that the advice of pop icon Beyonce helped her to navigate the negativity her casting was lambasted with by certain corners of the internet. Bailey recalled that Beyonce had previously told her to explicitly not look at the comments section on any of her platforms. “I was at the D23 Expo and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of hte negativity.”

The Little Mermaid is begins making waves in theaters on May 26, 2023.
