Blumhouse’s futuristic killer doll is set to return for more mayhem in M3GAN 2.0, which is scheduled for release in early 2025.

It’s official — the wildly popular M3GAN will have a sequel in 2025, bringing horror fans’ new favorite killer doll back to the big screen.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the horror phenomenon’s sequel, titled M3GAN 2.0, was confirmed by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banners. The film is set to hit theaters on Jan. 17, 2025. Akela Cooper, who wrote the first film, will also pen the sequel.

The plot of M3GAN 2.0 has not yet been disclosed, but both of the film’s stars are set to return. Allison Williams’ Gemma, whose role helped give life to the unruly A.I. doll, as well as M3GAN’s best friend Cady (Violet McGraw), will play significant roles in the sequel. Williams, who was an executive producer on the original, will now serve as a producer. While M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone has yet to be announced as returning, the film’s producers reportedly aim to work out a deal with him.

Everyone Has M3GAN Fever

While Avatar: The Way of Water has dominated the winter box office, M3GAN distinguished itself in the horror arena by swiftly outpacing 2022’s most popular horror film, Smile. M3GAN was also a hit among critics, landing a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and rivaling Blumhouse’s most acclaimed film, Get Out.

M3GAN focuses on Gemma, a talented robotics engineer who uses artificial intelligence to create a lifelike doll designed to be a child’s best friend and a parent’s most trusted ally. When Gemma suddenly gains custody of her newly orphaned niece, Cady, she turns to the M3GAN prototype for support. This choice has devastating consequences as the doll takes on a life of its own and becomes too protective of Cady, causing M3GAN to attack anybody who puts Cady in danger.

Along with becoming a box office hit, the titular killer doll also struck a chord with fans, particularly the LGBTQ+ community, which has already labeled her a queer icon. Screenwriter Cooper recently discussed how M3GAN affected members of the queer community, saying, “One of my friends who is a gay man [said] this setup is actually found family, where this little girl has lost her family, and she has to go live with her aunt. Then this doll is also brought into the situation. That resonates for a lot of people in the gay community, the idea of found family.”

M3GAN is out now in theaters.
