Magic: The Gathering – Wilds of Eldraine Release Date, Leaks and Spoilers

MTG Wilds of Eldraine Official Art

Magic: The Gathering‘s fairy tale-inspired plane of Eldraine will be coming back this fall in the upcoming set Wilds of Eldraine. The expansion is scheduled to release in September this year, and promises to let players explore Eldraine’s dark and mystical wilds for the first time, in contrast to the regal keeps and castles first introduced in Thrones of Eldraine.

Fans are excited to see how Eldraine’s inhabitants survived the Phyrexian invasion in March of the Machine, how they’re picking up the pieces, and which characters will be making a comeback. In addition to its spellbinding lore and more down-to-earth tone than recent sets, players are expecting some impactful and powerful cards, especially given Thrones of Eldraine‘s power levels. Read on for all the information revealed so far about Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming expansion set Thrones of Eldraine.

MTG: Wilds of Eldraine Release Date

<!–[if IE 9]> <![endif]–>

Wilds of Eldraine releases on Sep. 8, 2023. Like all newly released MTG sets, local game stores will host a prerelease event a week prior to launch, and keen players can get their hands on the pre-release kit on Sep. 1, 2023. According to reddit, Wizards of the Coast decided not to include a special card inside the Wilds of Eldraine pre-release kit, but instead it will include a couple of tokens.

Prereleases are crucial for the success of a new set, from cutting-edge Standard sets to Masters sets. They fulfill Wizards’ mission of getting players acquainted with MTG‘s newest mechanics, familiarizing them with never-before-seen cards, and most importantly, giving fans the opportunity to play and enjoy MTG with friends at a local game store. Sets are often judged by the MTG community not only by the power level of their cards but also the experience of a prerelease event or drafting event, so any players interested in Wilds of Eldraine should give the prerelease event a try.

Wilds of Eldraine Launches With Two New Commander Decks

As the popularity of MTG‘s Commander format has skyrocketed in recent years, Wizards of the Coast has been introducing ready-to-play commander decks with each new expansion set. Like other recent sets, Wilds of Eldraine‘s Commander decks are pre-constructed decks of 100 cards based on a theme and archetype. They enable strategies that are easy for beginners to learn but also engaging enough to pique the interest of more experienced players.

Virtue and Valor and Fae Dominion are the two new Commander products launching with Wilds of Eldraine. Virtue and Valor is a green/white deck that aims to “buff creatures and crush enemies” with the help of Syr Ellivere and company. Fae Dominion is a blue/black deck that “summons flocks of faeries and plays tricks” with Tegwyll as its commander. Both decks share a common goal, to overwhelm opponents on the battlefield, but they achieve it with vastly different strategies.

Wilds of Eldraine Set, Draft and Collector Booster Boxes

<!–[if IE 9]> <![endif]–>MTG Wilds of Eldraine Boosters

Wizards of the Coast also announced Set, Draft, and Collector Booster boxes for Wilds of Eldraine. These Boosters are considered the main product of every new Standard-legal set. The Draft Booster Box, as the name implies, is meant for drafting events and is the cheapest of the bunch — however players should be wary that Draft boosters contain fewer rare and mythic rare cards on the whole.

Set Boosters are the standard offering, and they’re the most popular Boosters with players. They have better chances to contain rare cards, foils and alternate art prints. Wilds of Eldraine Set Boosters include an uncommon or rare alternate-art borderless card that replaces one common card in the pack. Additionally, players have a 33% chance of opening a full-art land in each Set and Draft Booster.

Full-art foil lands are included in the Collector Booster Box, which is by far the priciest of the three, but it contains more extra-rare cards on average than other Boosters — particularly alternate-art and full-art foils. Unlike other sets, there will be no MTG Jumpstart Boosters releasing with Wilds of Eldraine.

Revisiting planes has been a recurring storytelling tool for Magic: The Gathering for years. Players have had the luxury of traveling more than a few times to fantastic planes like Dominaria, Ravnica and Innistrad. It’s yet to be seen whether Eldraine will join the ranks of MTG‘s returning planes, but for now, it’s hard to say. Very little is known yet about Wilds of Eldraine‘s lore, but considering March of the Machine‘s aftermath, it’s likely upcoming stories will remain fairly self-contained.

No cards have been revealed yet, but Wizards of the Coast will provide more information as September draws closer, so stay tuned. Players should expect leaked cards and spoilers starting Aug. 15, 2023, when Wizards kicks off the official spoiler season by showcasing cards and mechanics from the set. Wilds of Eldraine will also be available on MTG Arena just three days ahead of its tabletop release on Sep. 5, 2023 for those who just can’t wait to explore the magical plane of Eldraine.
