Critical Role Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer reveals which scene adapted scene from Campaign in The Legend of Vox Machina blew him away.
Critical Role Dungeon Master Matt Mercer revealed which scene from The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 blew away his expectations when adapting it from the live play.
In an interview with Polygon, Matt Mercer described the work that went into recreating the Chroma Conclave’s destruction of Emon and how he had to temper his expectations of how well they could pull it off. The Critical Role DM said it “was something that was so clear in my head, and [something I] already knew was going to be such a challenge to convey the threat and destruction and a sense of dread.” Despite setting the bar low, the end result still wowed the voice actor.
Creating the Chroma Conclave in Vox Machina
“The scale of that not only was gonna be expensive, but it was going to be just the challenge to do for the length that we want to do it for that opening episode,” Mercer said. “And so a big part of me was like, Adjust your expectations, Matt, set the bar low. I can’t expect them all to be perfect and it’ll just be as good as we can get it. The entire team not only just rose to the occasion, they blew my expectations out of the water and I’m just so, so happy.”
The scene in question takes up half the premiere episode, following the four chromatic dragons as they lay waste to the city Vox Machina had found a home in during Season 1. It also sets up the central conflict for the season as Vox Machina sets out to defeat the Chroma Conclave, which comprised a significant portion of the first campaign. It’s unclear how long the battle with the chromatic dragons may last on the series, with The Legend of Vox Machina renewed for a third season.
The Chroma Conclave poses a greater threat than the Briarwoods in Season 1, with the four Ancient Dragons far more potent than the young Brimscythe they killed in the series’ first two episodes. Each dragon has its own set of dangerous attacks the group must face to defeat them. The Chroma Conclave consists of Umbrasyl, the Hope Devourer; Raishan, the Diseased Deceiver; Vorugal, the Frigid Doom and Thordak, the Cinder King and leader of the group.
New episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina air on Prime Video on Thursdays in batches of three. The entire first season is available now.
