What Is The Mishima Clan And How Did It Originate?
Mishima family is probably the most important clan in the Tekken series. The Mishima was originally a warrior class clan serving the Japanese Emperor. The clan is said to have been originated back during the Heian period (794-1185). The Heian period was a real-life period in Japanese history. During the Heian period, the Chinese influence in the Japanese island nation reached its peak. The Heian period is also, often considered the peak of Japanese court and culture including art, poetry, and literature. Due to these reasons, it is also known as the Golden Age in Japanese history.
Coming back to the Mishima family, The clan originated during the period when Taira and Minamoto’s clans were already in power. The clan started gaining prominence during World War 2. It built an industrial empire providing military resources to Japan. After the war, Jinpachi Mishima started going away from the military and focused on martial arts. He invented his karate style called the Mishima Style Fighting Karate. He started teaching this style to his son, Heihachi Mishima, and his future wife Kazumi.
Heihachi married Kazumi and they had a son together. He was named Kazuya Mishima. After Jinpachi was imprisoned and Kazumi died, Heihachi became the leader of the Mishima family. He taught his son Kazuya and his other adopted son Lee Chaolan. He taught them by the famous motto: A fight is about who is left standing, nothing else.
Some Early History About The Mishima Family
Now, as I said before, the Mishima family is messed up. Heihachi organized a coup against his father Jinpachi and took control of the company. Jinpachi made an attempt to take his company back but in vain. Heihachi imprisoned his father underneath Hon-Maru, a shrine of the Mishima family.
Heihachi soon killed his wife Kazumi. Kazumi had earlier realized that if she does not stop her husband Heihachi and their son Kazuya, they would threaten the whole world. They will become a very powerful threat to the world. So she decided to assassinate them both. She fails and is killed by Heihachi. Kazuya realized his father was behind his mother’s death and tried to fight him. He was thrown off a cliff which led to the events which started the Tekken series. Kazuya survived and climbed back up.
Heihachi adopted a son named Lee Chaolan as a rival for Kazuya. Heihachi taught both of his sons seriously. This led them to master the martial arts. This also had a consequence as they both started hating Heihachi for the severe treatment they deserve. A few years later Heihachi wanted to be sure that he had not transmitted the Devil Gene. To confirm this, he had a child with an unknown Swedish woman. The child was named Lars Alexandersson.
Some Recent History Of The Mishima Family
Years later, Kazuya had become a master in the martial arts. He faced his father in the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Heihachi is defeated by Kazuya, who throws him down the cliff. Kazuya takes control of the Mishima company. Kazuya later confronts Jun Kazama in the second King of Iron Fist Tournament. They both marry and have a son named Jin Kazama. Kazuya is later killed by his father Heihachi, who survived, in the 2nd tournament.
Jin starts his learning under his grandfather Heihachi. By the end of the 3rd King of Iron Fist Tournament, Heihachi shoots Jin in the head. Jin awakens his devil gene and becomes Devil Jin. Since then, Jin has hated his Mishima heritage and sought to get rid of it. During his journey to free himself of his heritage he defeats several powerful foes. He fights both his grandfather Heihachi and his father Kazuya (he was revived by the G Corporation). At the end of the 4th King of Iron Fist Tournament, Jin fights and defeats his great-grandfather Jinpachi who was reanimated by a demon spirit. Jinpachi finally passed away peacefully.
After the end of the 4th tournament, Jin takes the control of the family’s company. He soon becomes a fierce tyrannical leader. Lars appears on the scene. Lars joins hands with Heihachi’s adopted son Lee Chaolan. They both work together to stop the war between Mishima Zaibatsu and the G Corporation now headed by Kazuya.
Heihachi finally dies at the hands of his son Kazuya in a battle to the death. Both Lars and Lee now plan to use Jin to put an end to the already raging war. The enemy they are up against is Kazuya. Now a tough battle is up between Kazuya against his brothers and son.
Below is The Mishima Family Tree:
We never knew who was the founder of the Mishima Family. One thing we know is who started the martial arts school in the family. That was Jinpachi Mishima, the founder of the Mishima karate style. In the first few Tekken games, he was mentioned as being dead. He was later revived in the 5th game.
Jinpachi was overthrwon by his son Heihachi. He was very angry and concerned over Heihachi getting greedy for world domination. Jinpachi died of starvation after being imprisoned by his son. He would then come back to life once again due to a vengeful spirit taking over his body.
The successor to Jinpachi Mishima was Heihachi. Heihachi used to be a good family man once. His wife prophesized a dark future if he and his son get powerful. She attacked Heihachi but was killed. Kazumi warned Heihachi that killing her would start an endless cycle of eternal hatred. He still went ahead and killed her.
Heihachi then trained his sons, Kazuya and Lee in martial arts. He’d soon discover his wife was right when his son becomes bloodthirsty for his life in order to exact revenge upon him. He later came to know about his grandson Jin. He used Jin to lure out Ogre so that he can strike a deal with the god (Ogre). Jin kills Ogre and Heihachi betrays Jin.
Heihachi organizes another tournament. At stake is the Mishima Zaibatsu. Heihachi, Kazuya and Jin battle it out in the temple. Jin wins and flees the battle scene. Heihachi is believed to be dead but still survives. He comes back and takes control of the company and wages a war against Kazuya-led G Corporation. Heihachi is later killed by Kazuya in an epic duel.
She is the wife of Heihachi and mother of Kazuya. Little is known about her since the beginning of the series. She knew Heihachi since he was a kid and used to train with him. She was killed by her husband for opposing him.
Heihachi’s son Kazuya vowed revenge on his father ever since he was 5 years old. Kazuya is given a tragic backstory to make him the perfect protagonist. But he reveals his monster side when throwing his father off the cliff.
After Jin wins the 5th tournament Kazuya becomes the leader of the G corporation and starts opposing his son. After Kazuya’s final battle with Heihachi, Akuma appears. The two duke it out. The result of the battle is unknown but it is sure that Kazuya survived.

Lee was Chinese by birth and was adopted by Heihachi to make a good rival with Kazuya. He also became the heir to the Mishima Zaibatsu and managed its operations in the USA. Lee was banished from the family after Heihachi killed Kazuya and took over control in the 2nd tournament.
He becomes a good character as the plot develops. He starts his own robotics company. Lee enters the 4th tournament under the alias Violet but is defeated by his revived brother Kazuya. Lee later meets Lars and together they set out to stop the war.
Lars is another son of Heihachi and brother of Kazuya and Lee. He went rogue and opposed both G Corp and Mishima Company when the war broke out. Lars later joins hands with Lee and Jin to put an end to the G Corp.
Jun Kazama was sent to the 2nd King of Iron Fist Tournament to stop Kazuya from smuggling animals. They had a son named Jin. Ogre, a god, killed Jun in a battle. Before dying, Jun asked Jin to go to Heihachi.
Jin is the most popular Tekken character and probably the strongest. He was brought up by his mother. Jin sought out his grandfather in return to kill the Ogre. Heihachi enrolls Jin in a school where Jin meets Lin. Lin is the granddaughter of Wang Jinrei, Heihachi’s greatest ever enemy.
Jin, in the tournament, kills Ogre but is shot in the head by Heihachi. He lives the next few years in hiding and trains himself. Jin makes it to the 5th tournament only to be captured by the company’s forces. Kazuya and Heihachi go to where Jin is kept. The trio fight and Jin comes out on top.
Jin later enters the next tournament started by Jinpachi. He defeats Jinpachi and takes the company into his hands. Jin wages a war against the whole world in the manga. His only goal is to find someone worthy of killing him so he can destroy the devil within himself. This led Jin to summon and fight the godly beast Azazel. Jin still wins and goes on to live. He wanders as he is weak and is rescued by Lars.
The last member of the Mishima family is Akuma Kazama. She is not a direct descendant of the family. She is the niece of Jun Kazama. We never knew anything else about her family. She enters the tournament for personal reasons and is not ready to believe the lineage she is part of.
