The image, which user ProtectionResident76 uploaded on Reddit, shows the twins clinging to one of the titular friendly spirits from My Neighbor Totoro as they fly across a star-filled night sky. Mabel seems to be enjoying herself, while Dipper appears terrified.
Studio Ghibli Films Inspire Fan Art
This art isn’t the first of incredible crossover illustrations for the beloved Studio Ghibli movie. For example, a talented animator posted a video last year that features My Neighbor Totoro’s Mei on a blue tricycle recreating the epic motorcycle slide from Katsuhiro Otomo’s science fiction classic, Akira. Moreover, another Reddit user shared an adorable illustration that sees Totoro helping a Charmander protect its fiery tail from the rain.
Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, My Neighbor Totoro follows sisters Mei and Satsuki as the two young girls move to the countryside with their academic father in order to be closer to their sick mother. In their new house, the girls meet several different kinds of spirits who whisk them away on whimsical and fun-filled adventures. The film debuted in April 1988 and earned over $41 million at the worldwide box office.
Despite its premiere occurring over 30 years ago, My Neighbor Totoro continues to inspire creative individuals to this day, and it’s not just fan artists. Most notably, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and the Royal Shakespeare Company teamed up to adapt the movie’s fantastical story to the stage. Currently, the production is in its final week at the Barbican in London, with the last performance scheduled for Jan. 21.
A cartoon series created by Alex Hirsch, Gravity Falls originally aired 40 episodes from June 2012 to February 2016. The story sees twins Dipper and Mabel spending the summer with their great uncle Stan in the titular small town. There, they discover many supernatural (and often comedic) mysteries to solve and eventually find themselves facing off against the triangle-shaped and horrifying Bill Cipher. The show won multiple prestigious awards, including a BAFTA Award, three Annie Awards and two Emmy Awards. Gravity Falls was also one of Disney’s highest-rated shows in 2015 and 2016.
