The Sandman star Mason Alexander Park confirms that production on the Season 2 of Netflix’s dark fantasy drama will officially start this summer.

Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire on The Sandman, confirmed that Netflix is planning to start the production of Season 2 this coming summer.

During an interview video posted on Twitter, Park gave fans an update regarding the development of the next installment to the hit dark fantasy drama. “There’s more Sandman coming in a really cool way, and it can take many forms,” Park revealed. “We’re starting shooting in the summer, and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take.” They went on to share their excitement about the new format Netflix might be planning for Season 2.

The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved Vertigo comic book series of the same name made its debut in August 2022, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows during its first seven weeks. Despite its great reception from both critics and viewers, the streamer took three months before deciding to officially renew The Sandman for a second season. According to Netflix executive Peter Friedlander, they first wanted to take their time discussing the best next step for the show with Gaiman and showrunner Allan Heinberg, before making the official renewal announcement.

What to Expect for The Sandman Season 2

Although it has already been confirmed that The Sandman is coming back for Season 2, fans can’t help but worry about its future, especially when Netflix has been canceling a number of its original shows these past months, as well as reversing some of its renewal decisions. Because of this, Gaiman addressed this concern by assuring fans that “there will be more Sandman” in the future. There is currently no target date set for the return of the acclaimed drama, but Friedlander previously teased that The Sandman Season 2 may follow the same release format as Stranger Things Season 2, where episodes debuted in batches.

The Sandman centers around a godlike being named Morpheus/Dream (Tom Sturridge) as he tries to reclaim his power and kingdom after over a hundred years of being held captive by an occult leader. Season 1 also featured three of Dream’s Endless siblings, including Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Park), and Despair (Donna Preston), while briefly mentioning Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction. During the CCXP 2022, Gaiman confirmed that Dream’s youngest sibling, Delirium, will finally be introduced in Season 2.

One of the popular scenes from Season 1 was “The Oldest Game” showdown between Morpheus and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie), where they tested each other’s wits and imagination. To fans’ joy, Gaiman previously teased that Dream and Lucifer’s highly anticipated rematch would be something entirely unexpected.

The Sandman Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
