Avatar: The Way of Water surges past Spider-Man: No Way Home’s impressive 2021 tally, now positioned to cross $2 billion at the box office.

Avatar: The Way of Water continues sailing up the all-time box-office charts, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s take as it’s set to net director James Cameron his third $2 billion-dollar film.

The Avatar sequel is now the sixth highest-grossing movie ever, netting over $1.928 billion in worldwide ticket sales to date, reports Variety. That figure eclipses No Way Home‘s tally of $1.922 billion, helping Cameron’s latest theatrical project to beat the Marvel Cinematic Universe film helmed by John Watts. The next inevitable milestone will see the sequel become a member of the $2 billion box-office club, an achievement Cameron’s movies have achieved twice previously.

Avatar 2 Aims for the Worldwide Top 5

The newest numbers put The Way of Water in striking distance of breaking the Top 5 all-time earners worldwide, now in sixth. The original Avatar movie remains top of the all-time box-office list, generating over $2.9 billion while the Canadian director’s romance classic, Titanic, is third with more than $2.19 billion. The rest of the five include Marvel’s highest-grossing film, Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) in second, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion) in fourth and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion) in fifth.

The Way of Water looks set to make a significant profit on its estimated $350-$460 million budget, with Cameron claiming the Avatar follow-up’s success has forced him to make sequels. Cameron announced future installments of his Avatar film series far in advance, with Avatar 3 set for a December 2024 release and the following two movies scheduled for 2026 and 2028 premieres, respectively. Indeed, stars Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldaña said in an interview earlier this month that they needed little convincing from Cameron to agree to appear in the future sequels.

Since its release, The Way of Water has been a critical success and deemed a proper follow-up to the original 2009 Avatar movie, which brought Cameron’s long-standing vision to life, having conceived ideas for it as far back as 1994, when development initially began. The movie earned two nominations at the 80th Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture in a Drama and Best Director for Cameron. It has also won several critics awards and currently has a 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Way of Water also features acclaimed actors Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Michelle Yeoh. The epic science action film was co-written by Cameron alongside married screenwriting and movie production duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. There is no confirmation yet of when The Way of Water will be made available for streaming on Disney+. Such confirmation may take some time due to the film’s continued box-office momentum.

The Way of Water is now available in theaters across North America.
