Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 3 Review: Why Was Vader Powerless Before a Droid?

Here’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 3 review, and today I’m going to be far more strict than in my previous two. Because frankly, I feel that this episode could’ve been just a little better. As we’ll see, there are some plot issues here that simply aren’t coherent. So before we get to unpack those, let’s just recap a bit on what’s happened so far.

So, Leia and Obi-Wan are on their way to Mapuzo while Reva is trying to assert her dominance within the Empire ranks. At that last point, she revealed to Obi-Wan that Anakin is still alive, something that made the Jedi Master panic as he felt his presence with the force as they were about to depart. So, now, what happens? What made this episode so uncomfortable for me, join me, and let’s check it out!

Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 3 Review

So we kick off with Obi-Wan trying to connect spiritually with Qui-Gon Jinn, but his PTSD and flashbacks of Anakin dead won’t let him. Kudos to the editor of this series for putting in the nice cuts of Darth Vader getting assembled. Then, as a troubled Obi-Wan tries to put himself together, Leia bothers him with her young bravado by asking him childish questions. So, to get her off his back, he just hands her Lola, her recently repaired droid.

A PTSD Obi-Wan vs a powerless Vader seems odd

Meanwhile, we got to see Darth Vader in full action scolding Reva for her inefficacy. Just as we’re accustomed to, Vader threatens Reva with her life if she fails. So we get to see more of Reva’s story arc as it expands. Moreover, when Reva goes to the Grand Inquisitor, who force chokes her and bends her over the desk, the man flinches when she tells him that she went over him to talk to the big boss. So, Reva orders some probe droids deployed to seek out Kenobi.

Mapuzo Hitchhiker’s Guide To Trouble

Leia and Kenobi land in Mapuzo and are out on the sticks, their transport doesn’t arrive. So while Obi-Wan explains to Leia their cover, she blows it up by hitchhiking a ride with an Empire transport. The driver is distraught by finding those two in the middle of nowhere and their story doesn’t add up. So, he’s snitching on them later. We’ll get to that.

The driver picks up some stormtroopers that ask a few questions that Obi-Wan confusedly answers but gets them out of the way. Then a tense dialogue between a confused Leia, that thinks that Obi-Wan is her dad ensues. I think that this could’ve been a little better. But I guess the writers simply compromised.

Gunfight

We then see how the driver snitches on Obi-Wan and Leia at a roadblock with some stormtroopers. The troopers wish to use a probe droid on Obi-Wan and a gunfight ensues and the Jedi Master kills the troopers. Leia is shocked. After that, another blockade intercepts the duo, and Teva, an undercover rebel alliance spy dressed as an Imperial officer kills the troopers and escorts Leia and Kenobi to a garage to safety.

Empire Looming In

When they hide in the garage, Obi-Wan begins to feel Vader’s presence. Remember at the beginning of this text when I told you about some inconsistencies? Why doesn’t Vader feel Kenobi? Moreover, when the lightsaber battle ensues —the highlight of the episode— the climactic finish has a Vader choke holding by Force a disarmed Kenobi, dragging him into the fire to make barbecue out of him.

But then, out of nowhere, a Teva from up on the rocks goes sniper mode kills, Vader’s stormtrooper detail and a droid, yes a droid picks up Obi-Wan and a contemplative Vader just looks. While this is fair because we have to let Kenobi live for Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope, I simply consider that this climactic finish could’ve been better written.

I mean, Vader could’ve simply used the force to lift Teva from her hideout and snap her neck. All in all that’s the weak point of the episode. But I guess that the rest is fine. That’s all the time we have for now. Check out also our recap and I’ll see y’all next week for another episode review. And remember. The force is with you, always!
