Our Flag Means Death stars Rhys Darby, Samba Schutte and Kristian Nairn tease the pirate-themed period romantic comedy’s upcoming second season.
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 will spin an even more “epic” and “heartbreaking” yarn than its predecessor, according to stars Rhys Darby, Samba Schutte and Kristian Nairn.
The trio discussed the period romantic comedy’s second season during an Instagram Live session hosted by Nairn. Responding to a fan’s request for them to describe Our Flag Means Death Season 2 in three words, Schutte replied “bigger” and “epic,” while Nairn and Darby responded with “extra” and “complex.” Schutte then offered up one final adjective: “heartbreaking.” The star, who plays Roach, later elaborated on this last response, insisting that he was referring to the second season’s “many sweet moments” and the word “heartbreaking” didn’t necessarily mean what fans thought it did in this context.
HBO Max announced it was renewing Our Flag Means Death in June 2022. The announcement followed months of campaigning by the show’s fanbase, something series creator David Jenkins touched on in a public statement released after the news broke. “We felt the show was special while we were making it,” Jenkins said. “But fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet. Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”
Our Flag Means Death Sets Sail for Season 2
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 began filming in New Zealand several months later, with the shoot lasting until December 2022. Jenkins confirmed via Twitter that principal photography on the latest batch of episodes had wrapped, including a behind-the-scenes photo from the set in his tweet. The image spotlights one of the primary settings in the HBO Max series, the deck of protagonist Stede Bonnet’s (Darby) pirate ship The Revenge. It also provides a glimpse at the Stagecraft technology employed by the production, which makes it possible to convincingly recreate large outdoor environments on a studio soundstage.
While Jenkins remains tight-lipped regarding the plot of Our Flag Means Death Season 2, the showrunner previously hinted that tragedy is on the horizon for Stede and his ragtag band of pirates. Specifically, an August 2022 tweet by Jenkins implied that The Revenge‘s resident scribe, Lucius (Nathan Foad), did indeed meet his demise at the hands of Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) during the Season 1 finale, “Wherever You Go, There You Are.”
Our Flag Means Death Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
