Outlander Canceled After Season 8, Approves Prequel Series

Starz announces its series Outlander will end after the premiere of Season 8 and officially gives the greenlight to the prequel Blood of my Blood.

Starz confirmed Outlander had been renewed for an eighth and final season.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service announced the time-traveling romance series based on Diana Gabaldon’s books would air 10 episodes for its final season. “For nearly a decade, Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide, and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. However, the Scottish franchise isn’t over. Starz officially ordered the prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The upcoming show will follow the love story between Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.

Outlander’s Prequel Series

In August 2022, Starz confirmed the Outlander prequel series after months of rumors surrounding its alleged development. Matthew B. Roberts, the showrunner and executive producer of the original show, will reprise his responsibilities in Blood of My Blood. Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain,” Roberts said.

It’s undetermined if Blood of My Blood will adapt an unpublished Outlander book. As for the show’s final season, the episodes will follow the events of Gabaldon’s 2014 book Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, the eighth entry in the series and last at the time of the Starz adaptation’s premiere date. In 2021, the Outlander author published the ninth volume Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. Gabaldon plans to end the book series with an untitled 10th installment.

Outlander Returns for Season 7

In December 2022, Starz unveiled the first teaser trailer for Outlander’s Season 7. The clip showcases cast members like Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser, Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and other familiar faces. Returning actors include Sophie Skelton as Brianna MacKenzie, Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie, John Bell as Young Ian, David Berry as Lord John Grey, Caitlin O’Ryan as Lizzie Beardsley and Paul Gorman as Josiah and Keziah Beardsley. Season 7 will also introduce new arrivals, with Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom, Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter and Joey Phillips as Denzell Hunter.

The last time viewers saw the Frasers was Outlander‘s intense Season 6 finale. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and Balfe’s pregnancy, Outlander had to shorten its episode count from 12 to 8. Claire and Jamie barricade themselves in a firefight against Richard Brown’s men in the finale. Also, the residents of Fraser’s Ridge demand Claire stand trial for her alleged involvement in Malva’s murder. It’s unclear where Claire’s fate lies in Season 7.

Outlander Season 7 premieres on Starz in the summer of 2023.
