Jon Bernthal, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Punisher, throws on his gloves and steps into the ring for a new training video with professional boxer and rapper Slink Proper.

Shared to Instagram, the video shows Bernthal throwing some punches while Slink Proper holds the pads. “How many ppl can say they’ve held pads for [the Punisher] himself?” the hip-hop artist wrote. “AkA [Jon Bernthal.] Also known as Shane walsh Mr.Take yo chick [during] an apocalypse!” he added, referring to Bernthal’s role on The Walking Dead. “PSA Don’t put him in none of [those Celebrity Boxing] matches b4 he tko [somebody] and end they actin career… HE GOT HANDS!”

Jon Bernthal Returns as the Punisher

Bernthal stepping into a boxing ring seems only fitting, given his close association with Daredevil, a superhero known for his ties to the squared circle. Bernthal made his debut as infamous vigilante Frank Castle/the Punisher during the second and penultimate season of the Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil in 2016. He subsequently reprised his role for the spinoff series Marvel’s The Punisher, which itself ran on Netflix for two seasons from 2017 to 2019.

Following The Punisher‘s cancellation, it was unclear if Bernthal would ever play Frank Castle again. However, it recently came to light that Bernthal would indeed be reprising his role as the Punisher for Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again, a Disney+ original series slated to premiere in spring 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Born Again stars fellow Netflix Daredevil alums Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprise their own roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively.

Who Is – And Isn’t – In Daredevil: Born Again?

Born Again also stars franchise newcomers Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston and Arty Froushan, who have all been cast in undisclosed roles. Meanwhile, Sandrine Holt has been cast as Vanessa Fisk, marking the first confirmed instance of a character from the Netflix series being recast for the Disney+ reboot. (Ayelet Zurer played Vanessa in Netflix’s Daredevil.) Moreover, at this time, Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson are not expected to reprise their Daredevil roles of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, respectively, for Born Again.
