Secret Invasion Star Says the Show is Marvel Superheroes for Grown-Ups

Human Talos surrounded by multiple Graviks on Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion star Ben Mendelsohn promised the forthcoming Disney+ miniseries will be a mature offering for adult MCU fans.

Speaking with USA Today, Mendelsohn insisted the action-adventure thriller will pique the interests of older fans, with Secret Invasion packing a more serious yet engaging tone for viewers. “This is one the grownups can dig. It’s mental. I hope it ends up being one of the coolest things that they’ve done,” he said.

Mendelsohn stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, playing Fury’s Skrull ally Talos. Mendelsohn said the relationship between Fury and Talos is stronger than ever in the miniseries despite the issues they face, with his character once again assuming the identity of former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Keller so he can work with Fury in plain sight. “The relationship between Talos and Fury is sort of tighter than it’s ever been, and really not good,” he said. “I don’t know if [Talos] is like Abbott to his Costello [but] it’s something that the audience will enjoy without losing how bad the situation gets.”

Talos and the Radicalized Skrulls of the MCU

Mendelsohn’s character appeared in Captain Marvel, with Talos leading his Skrulls to Earth where they took human form. After Fury and the titular superhero initially suspect that they’re villains, it’s revealed Talos and his fellow shapeshifters are cosmic refugees seeking a new home after losing it to the Kree. Talos then appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, when he assumed Fury’s place on Earth while the real Fury went into the universe to help the Skrulls find a home. However, Captain Marvel and Fury’s promises end up proving futile, causing a radicalized group of Skrulls led by Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) to head to Earth in Secret Invasion, assume the identities of political figures and try to take what they want by force.

The Fury who Talos works alongside in Secret Invasion is a very different man from the one Marvel fans are used to as Fury struggles to process things after the catastrophic events of the last two Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame. As a result, Fury is more pensive, reflective and paranoid than usual, boasting a more grizzled look without his signature eye patch. Talos is “very committed to trying to make stuff work” in a post-Thanos landscape during Secret Invasion ,according to Mendelsohn, but admits it’s a “difficult” transition for all involved.

Mendelsohn also stars alongside Emilia Clarke (G’iah), Olivia Colman (Sonya Falsworth), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Don Cheadle (James “Rhodey” Rhodes) in Secret Invasion, which will consist of six episodes. Created by Kyle Bradstreet, Secret Invasion is dubbed as the first “event” in MCU history, with Jackson also serving as an executive producer.
