Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has debunked reports claiming that Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron has been shelved at the company.
Speaking with Empire, Kennedy confirmed that both the Disney+ series Lando and the theatrical film Rogue Squadron are “still on the books. We just want them to be great.” She explained that Lucasfilm is only “going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made, and release them when they’re ready to be released.” Reports that Rogue Squadron, as well as Kevin Feige’s untitled Star Wars feature, had been shelved first emerged in March 2023.
Rogue Squadron was first announced in 2020 with Jenkins attached as director. While some fans doubted the project was still happening after a lull in updates, Jenkins shared in December 2022 that the film was still happening and that the now-scrapped Wonder Woman 3 was the reason for the long development period. “Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to [Rogue Squadron] after [Wonder Woman 3], which I was honored to do, so I agreed,” wrote Jenkins on Twitter. “They made a new deal with me. In fact, I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since.” At this time, it is unknown when Lucasfilm will move Rogue Squadron out of development and into pre-production.
Next Star Wars Movie Involves Daisy Ridley’s Rey
Lucasfilm has not released a new Star Wars film in theaters since 2019’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Instead, the company has been focused on expanding the beloved franchise with several Disney+ series like The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch and Andor. However, Lucasfilm recently announced three new films at Star Wars Celebration 2023 with the one that will reportedly hit the big screen first being director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s untitled “New Jedi Order” movie. The movie, with a screenplay by Steven Knight, will follow Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) as she re-establishes the Jedi Order 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker using the text that she was given and that Luke Skywalker imparted on her.
The other two films unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2023 were an untitled “Dawn of the Jedi” film and an untitled “New Republic” film. The former will be written and directed by James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). The film will take place 25,000 years before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope and explore the origins of the Jedi and Sith. The latter will be helmed by Dave Filoni and is described as a culmination of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew.
