In the past, Super Mario toys have revealed characters’ designs for the imminently arriving Nintendo film. In December 2022, Super Mario Galaxy‘s Luma joined the other seven plastic prizes, Princess Peach, Luigi, Toad, Bowser, Donkey Kong and two variations of Mario, in McDonald’s collaboration with Nintendo for themed Happy Meals. Previously, an Australian employee of the fast food chain posted a McDonald’s calendar featuring the first looks at Peach and Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Controversy Over The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Following the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s first teaser trailer, many people found fault with how Chris Pratt portrayed Mario. To avoid Pratt’s take on the character, some fans suggested watching a dubbed film version in either French or Italian.

Even Teen Titans voice actor Tara Strong wished Charles Martinet, who played Mario in the video games, would have returned to play the titular plumber. “Voice actors – I’m gonna put my heart & soul in this for at least 20 years, help sell billions in merch, make the studios millions of dollars & make generations around the world happy. Hollywood – We don’t care,” Strong wrote on Twitter. Despite not playing the lead, Martinet will make a cameo in an undisclosed role.

In addition to Pratt, The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s cast features Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Supporting cast members include Seth Rogen voicing Donkey Kong and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, DK’s grumpy grandfather.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases in theaters on April 7.
