The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 4, Episode 12, “Titans Forever,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Superboy finally meets his heroic father, Superman, in the series finale of Titans.
With the episode “Titans Forever,” the HBO Max series joins DC projects like Shazam! (2019) and Peacemaker on the list of faceless Superman cameos. Unlike the others, however, the Man of Steel’s super suit isn’t shown, only his red boots. Superman arrives at the end of the episode to give Superboy/Conner Kent (Joshua Orpin) some flying lessons for the first time ever.
Superman’s appearance in Titans comes after three whole seasons featuring Superboy. Along with Krypto the Superdog, Titans‘ Superboy debuted in the post-credits scene for the Season 1 finale, “Dick Grayson.” Keeping with his comic book roots, Superboy is a clone created by Project Cadmus using the DNA of both Superman and his greatest nemesis, Lex Luthor. This makes the two Superboy’s biological fathers.
Superboy Met Lex Luthor Before Superman
Superboy was supposed to meet Superman at S.T.A.R. Labs in Metropolis during the Season 4 premiere, “Lex Luthor,” but the latter couldn’t make it. Superman had to go save another galaxy from the collapse of a red dwarf star, so he left Superboy a letter reading, “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to meet you today. But when I get back, I would very much like to see you and finally get to know you.” Superboy then watched a live feed of Superman flying through Space to save the day.
However, the Titans stepping foot in Metropolis prompted Luthor (Titus Welliver) to contact Superboy. Superboy met Luthor and learned why he was created, as well as the fact that Luthor was dying of Kryptonite poisoning. Luthor wanted to teach and get to know Superboy throughout his last six months alive, this way the hero could take over his company, LexCorp. However, shortly after meeting his son, Luthor was mystically murdered by Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente) in front of Superboy’s eyes.
Superboy Turned Into Lex Luthor on Titans
Superboy’s introduction to Luthor at the start of Season 4 sent him on a path embracing the genetics he received from the villain. He shaved his head bald to look like Luthor in the episode “Brother Blood,” and started behaving like his evil father before officially taking over as LexCorp’s CEO in the episode “Game Over.” Using LexCorp and his Luthor traits, Conner tried to stop Season 4’s primary antagonist, Brother Blood (Joseph Morgan), on his own, but was eventually killed by the villain. Thanks to some Red Kryptonite though, he is revived by Nightwing/Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) to join the finale’s final fight, allowing him to meet Superman afterward.
All seasons of Titans are available to stream now on HBO Max.
