The Batman’s Penguin Spinoff Will Be Cobblepot’s ‘Scarface’ Story

The Penguin executive producer Matt Reeves likens the upcoming The Batman spinoff series to Brian De Palma’s classic crime drama Scarface.

The Batman spinoff series The Penguin will drop Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) into Scarface-like story, according to executive producer Matt Reeves.

Reeves, who also co-wrote and directed The Batman, likened The Penguin to Brian De Palma’s classic 1983 crime drama in an interview with Fandom. “The idea of getting to do the series and really sort of dive into the depths of who this character is and look at that moment where it’s kind of his Scarface moment,” Reeves said. “The moment where everyone’s underestimated him, he’s gonna reach for power in Gotham. Lauren LeFranc, who wrote it and who’s the showrunner, she’s so wonderful. She dug into the character. I kept showing her the movie as she was working on the script, before the movie was ever done.”

“So the idea of us getting to go back in and work with Colin is super exciting,” Reeves continued. “He’s so incredible in The Banshees of Inisherin. He’s just an amazing actor. It’s amazing, because he’s so different [in The Banshees of Inisherin]. But what he has beautifully, even as Penguin, as Oz, is, there is this level of vulnerability that he plays that is such a beautiful part of his soul and he always finds this way to project into the characters and I just think he’s really just very special. But more than anything, I just love him as a person.”

The Batman Director Discusses Penguin Spinoff

Reeves’ comments arrive hot on the heels of earlier remarks by the filmmaker made regarding The Penguin‘s place within the overarching continuity of his burgeoning Bat-verse. According to Reeves, the HBO Max series will take place after the events of The Batman and lay the groundwork for that film’s as-yet-untitled sequel. This tracks with recent reports that The Penguin is set to dramatically expand the ranks of Gotham City’s criminal underworld. Not only is Palm Springs star Cristin Milioti supposedly signed on to portray Sofia Falcone, but the production is also said to be auditioning for several other members of the infamous Falcone crime family, as well.

Milioti and any other franchise newcomers will find themselves working opposite an energized Farrell, who has publicly expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of diving deeper into the Penguin role. “I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to [in The Batman],” Farrell said in a recent interview. “There was all this extraordinary work done by [prosthetics artist Mike Moreno] and Mike Fontaine, his team… I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six of seven scenes that we did in the film.”

The Penguin does not yet have a release date.
