A new clip from The Flash reveals the true consequences of losing the Speed Force.
In a clip for the upcoming third episode of The Flash‘s four-part finale courtesy of The CW, the titular hero’s allies at S.T.A.R. labs learn the full extent of the damage that would be done if Barry Allen doesn’t survive his current battle with the Negative Speed Force. On top of Barry currently being thrust through time uncontrollably, it is revealed by the Speed Force Nora, portrayed by Michelle Harrison, that the Negative Speed Force stands poised to drive Barry straight into a future that will end with the demise of him, the Speed Force and, by extension, the entire Arrowverse timeline itself.
The final season of The Flash also marks the end of the Arrowverse as a whole, which fans have grown to know and love since the premiere of Arrow starring Stephen Amell all the way back in 2012. Grant Gustin, who has portrayed Barry Allen throughout the character’s time in the Arrowverse, opened up about bringing the franchise to a close in April, as well as the fact that it was rarely at the forefront of his mind. “I was always so focused on what we were doing, which was The Flash.” Gustin said, “I mean, you’re aware that you’re part of a greater Arrowverse, Berlanti-verse, universe, but there’s no point in thinking about the scale of it when you’re just kind of learning your scene and doing your job.”
Gustin has also spoken out on the subject of potentially returning to his now iconic role. Although the The Flash star confirmed that he hasn’t heard of any current plans for the character to continue on in the immediate future, he did admit that “If someone called me today or tomorrow and was like, ‘Hey, we have this amazing Flash idea,’ obviously it’s like, I’m gonna take that phone call and listen to that idea.”
Apart from giving the primary cast of characters a proper sendoff, the ninth and final season of The Flash has brought back numerous fan-favorites from throughout its run, including Tom Cavanagh. Cavanagh, who has portrayed an entire Multiverse unto himself of various versions of longtime Flash ally Harrison Wells, is returning to reprise his other role as the supervillainous Eobard Thawne, aka the Reverse-Flash, for the series’ final season. Showrunner Eric Wallace confirmed the news in February, stating simply, “This is Barry Allen’s final race, so you can’t tell that story without including his most infamous adversary: The Reverse-Flash.”
The Flash airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. EST on The CW, with episodes available to stream on the CW app the following day.
