The Flash Series Finale Sees Tom Cavanagh’s Return

Tom Cavanagh as Reverse-Flash in The Flash Season 8.

Ahead of The Flash‘s highly-anticipated series finale, the titular superhero series brings back one of Barry Allen’s biggest enemies to do battle with him one more time.

Per Entertainment Weekly, The Flash will see Tom Cavanagh return in the series closer, “A New World, Part Four,” as Eobard Thawne, aka the Reverse-Flash. While Cavanagh announced his return to The Flash this past February, showrunner Eric Wallace confirmed the actor would appear as his original Season 1 villain during this month’s finale “This is Barry Allen’s final race, so you can’t tell that story without including his most infamous adversary: The Reverse-Flash,” Wallace said. “And having brilliantly played the character since season 1, bringing Tom back as our show concludes its run was always part of the plan. Tom’s exciting portrayal of Eobard Thawne has been unforgettable for nine years, and fans will be delighted to know that he’s brought that same wonderful intensity to our finale, too.”

Eobard Thawne Returns For The Flash Series Finale

Cavanagh has been an ever-present on The Flash since its 2014 premiere, playing Eobard, the time-traveling descendant of Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) and the eponymous hero’s archenemy from the future. Additionally, Cavanagh’s character assumed the identity of Harrison Wells after killing Wells and portraying his various doppelgängers from alternate realities. He was last seen in Season 8 of the series when The Flash seemingly killed Eobard off permanently.

The Flash has gone all out to bring series favorites back throughout Season 9 as the Arrowverse nears its conclusion on the CW following the network’s acquisition by Nexstar Media Group last October. In Season 9, Episode 9, “It’s My Party and I’ll Die If I Want To,” Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen/Green Arrow returned from the dead to team up with Barry one more time. Though Amell expressed excitement over his return, he opted not to return in The Flash series finale because he believed it would better serve the story between the “Emerald Archer” and Barry.

Other notable Season 9 returns in The Flash include the villainous Dr. Ramsey Rosso/Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy), as well as Barry’s allies Wally West/Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale) and John Diggle/Spartan (David Ramsey). In addition to his acting work on The Flash, Cavanagh has also directed several episodes of the series. He also played Eobard Thawne in Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

“A New World: Part Four” is the final episode of a four-part conclusion for The Flash, which airs on May 24. Fans can tune in each Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET to catch new episodes of the show.
